CPRE Devon launches competitions to celebrate nature and the countryside

The Devon branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England is inviting church communities and primary school children from across the county to enter competitions to celebrate some of the things that make Devon so special.

CPRE Devon has launched three separate competitions this spring and hopes to be inundated with entries.

Countdown to Easter opening fixture under way

Newton Abbot’s 2018 summer jumps racing season gets off to a flying start this Easter on Saturday 31 March, when the racecourse reopens with its first fixture in an extended series of nineteen.

Windrush willow: Plant Supports

Make willow plant supports for your garden Learn how to weave willow with Richard from Windrush willow.

The plan is to make a tall wigwam shaped support for sweet peas in the morning. This can be repeated in the afternoon or you can choose to make a cylindrical grow through type support for peonies or penstemon’s.

We assume you are a complete beginner and will gently guide you through each project.

Please bring an apron, notepad and packed lunch.

Cost includes all willow materials, expert tuition and hot drinks throughout the day.

Bird watching for children

A bird watching event especially for children Borrow our binoculars and discover the birds along the Axe estuary with an experienced volunteer guide.

Try and spot all the birds on your bird spotter sheet and take a look through a telescope for an amazing view of the birds.

Major road network improving but disruption throughout the day expected

Large parts of the major road network are passable and improving, but disruption to travel should be expected throughout the day and into tomorrow.

Devon’s main routes are improving, but minor roads especially on high ground will remain impassable today.

Council contractors have all their resources; gritters, ploughs and snow blowers, working hard to clear the highway.

They are continuing to prioritise major routes, the primary and secondary road network, and access to larger communities, as well as to key services such as hospitals.

‘Holding Up’ by Edward Crooks launches at Castle Drogo

This week, artist and architectural designer Edward Crooks has launched a new theatrical installation called ‘Holding Up’ at Castle Drogo, a National Trust property on Dartmoor.
