Alzheimer’s patient encourages others to sign up to take part in dementia research

A retired pottery shop owner with early Alzheimer’s disease has said research has given him a new hope for life.

Eighty-year-old Martin Wallis, from Honiton, is currently taking part in a clinical trial at Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

The study, being supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in the South West, the research arm of the NHS, is one of many being carried out locally looking to halt the progression of dementia, the biggest killer in the UK.

The Real Food Store in Exeter is one of 100 leaders across England to have been selected for a competitive learning programme and Match Trading grant of up to £10,000.

More than 330 people across England applied for the Community Business Trade up Programme, run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs, in partnership with Power to Change. The programme supports people improving their local communities through trade.

Major roadworks in Newton Abbot

Wolborough Street in Newton Abbot will be closed during half term next month for major road works.

The road will be closed 24 hours a day from Monday 12 February to Saturday 17 February with a diversion route advised for through traffic. The work will take place between Wolborough Street traffic lights (Asda) and Ogwell Cross roundabout. The section of road between Pomeroy Road and Waltham Road will be completely reconstructed. Residents in the Rosebarn Lane area of Exeter have the chance to view proposals for a residents parking scheme at a public exhibition on Thursday (15 February).

New figures show that more than £5.3 million of National Lottery funding was invested in Exeter in 2017 alone. In total 36 National Lottery grants were awarded in Exeter during last year; providing a vital boost to arts, sports and heritage projects alongside community groups helping those most in need. World Wetlands Day marked at Seaton Wetlands

The 1st Seaton Rainbows marked World Wetlands Day with an evening of bird watching and crafts at Seaton Wetlands recently.
