£25m South West Institute of Technology plan reaches funding bid final

A multimillion pound bid to revolutionise digital technology education across the South West has reached the final phase of competition.

The Department for Education (DfE) is awarding £170 million to establish a network of Institutes of Technology across the country. They will offer top-quality training and apprenticeships in higher-level technical skills.

They will aim to bridge skills gaps in the economy by providing the knowledge and training that employers need. It would deliver a range of higher level courses across the digital, engineering and manufacturing sectors...

Public invited to quiz sea turtle experts

Top scientists will answer your questions about sea turtles in a live online Q&A on Friday (June 8).

To mark of World Oceans Day, University of Exeter researchers will take questions from 2:30-3pm in an event broadcast on Facebook .

The experts will include Professor Brendan Godley, one of the coordinators of Exeter’s world-leading turtle research group.

Alongside him will be PhD student Emily Duncan, an expert on turtles and plastic pollution, who will begin a voyage across the Pacific later this month to study the impact of micro-plastics.

The Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June.

Visitors can:

Tour of Britain Stage 2 marked by historic race through Victorian market

World class cyclists will race through the South Molton Pannier Market in September – the first time in the history of the modern Tour of Britain that it is has been routed through a building.

Stage 2 of the race will take place on Monday September 3, starting in the UK’s newest town, Cranbrook, in East Devon and finishing in Barnstaple, North Devon.

The route was announced at the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain national launch in central London on Tuesday evening (5 June).

County Council unwraps new strategy to reduce plastic waste

Devon County Council has pledged to phase out its use of the most polluting single-use plastic products within two years.

The move is part of a new action plan the Council has developed to help cut the amount of single-use plastic waste in Devon.

The ‘Plastics Strategy’ outlines how various single-use plastic food and beverage packaging and tableware (such as cutlery and cups) will be removed from Council work locations by 2020.
