Be part of Crediton's new Community book store

The Book Shop on Crediton High Street took a big step towards a new social enterprise era on Saturday 17th November with the launch of the share issue to create Crediton Community Bookshop.

The enterprise has already gained outstanding support. Patrons have been announced as Dame Babette Cole , Michael Morpurgo , Mal Peet and William Trevor . Speaking about them earlier this year, Michael Morpurgo said: "Every town needs a great book shop. Crediton has one. Long may it continue!"

Exeter Uni students use poetry to revive lost memories

Students from the University of Exeter’s English department are reading to older people in residential care homes, as part of a project that uses literature and poetry as a stimulus for senior citizens, including those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The Care Homes Reading Project is in its second year of operation. 49-hour radio show raises over £1,800

Local radio presenter Chris Tees has just completed broadcasting non-stop for 49 hours to raise funds towards the cost of launching a local community radio station.

Chris said “I planned to do 48 hrs, but forgot about the clocks going back that weekend when I booked the time off work but, I was determined to do the whole weekend. It was extremely hard especially watching the studio clock go back an hour Sunday morning”.

The challenge raised just over £900 with help from the other volunteers at the station who supported Chris throughout with food and coffee.

Community Composting at Arena Park Exeter

102 properties at Arena Park in Exeter are benefiting from a successful community composting site.

To help address fly tipping of garden waste, advice was gained from Devon County Council and the Community Composting Network back in February 2012 following residents' request at an estate walkabout. Devon & Cornwall Housing provided two ‘scotty hot box compost bins’ to see if this would help alleviate the problem.

Several months on and the scheme has proved so successful that the volunteer residents who oversee the site applied to their local councillors for funding...

The Great Exeter Tea Cosy Competition comes to Exeter

There is something exciting going on at The Hub on the Green and word is spreading. There is talk of tea cosies in school playgrounds, street corners and all over Twitter.

Liz Croft, who volunteers her time to run the knitting group at the hub, had a lovely idea to start a tea cosy competition and Joey Lee who runs The Hub on the Green challenged her to take it outside of the hub and make it something rather special. And she has.

Inaugural St Thomas Community Festival planned for 2013

The inaugural St Thomas Community Festival will take place in and around St Thomas Pleasure Grounds on Saturday 14th September 2013. The festival is the brainchild of the recently formed St Thomas Community Association (STCA) and is intended to be a celebration of the St Thomas area as a vibrant, diverse and exciting part of the city.

The organisers hope that the event will build community cohesion, bringing together residents of all ages and backgrounds in a celebration of the variety of sporting, creative and musical talents that flourish in the area.
