Rather than seeing other children go without toys in the festive season, research from Argos and Barnardo’s shows that 95 per cent of children would happily give up some of their Christmas presents, if it meant a disadvantaged child could enjoy a happier Christmas.

And the spirit of Christmas continues with children also sharing their time, the new study revealing that 54 per cent of children spend time during their Christmas break supporting various causes with bake sales, sponsored silences, carol concerts and charitable donations.

This Autumn half term from Tuesday 28th October to Saturday 1st November, The Bike Shed Theatre, in Exeter’s Fore Street, will be transformed into a kitchen, dining room, and story-world for the arrival of Tortoise & Hare- as they make a meal of storytelling. The perfect show for children ages 5 and up (and their parents) it includes a three-course meal crafted from fine local produce, as literature and cuisine combine. Just one catch, you’re the cook!

Exeter cyclo-cross event for young cyclists

Young cyclists have the opportunity to take part in a Go Ride Racing cyclo-cross event for beginners on Saturday (27 September).

The event at Mincinglake Valley Park in Exeter is an opportunity for young people aged from seven to 16 years old to get their first taste of one of the nation’s fastest growing cycling disciplines, cyclo-cross.

An innovative programme bringing actors into classrooms across Devon to encourage and support children to make healthier choices on diet and exercise has been selected to feature in this week’s British Science Festival.

The Healthy Lifestyles Programme is being run by specialists from the University of Exeter Medical School and Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

The programme sees Year 5 pupils work with a drama group who play the part of four characters: Snacky Sam, Disorganised Duncan, Active Amy and Football Freddie.

Parents fear children will be locked out of home towns

Parents in the South West fear their children will be locked out of their home towns in future as house prices and rents continue to rise.

According to figures from a new YouGov poll for the National Housing Federation, 72 per cent of English parents are worried about rising rent levels and 81 per cent about rising house prices and the impact of both on the next generation. Of those in the South West, over a third (39 per cent) believe it is unlikely their youngsters will have the chance to rent or buy a home in the area where they have grown up.

Join Newton Abbot Racecourse for an evening of racing on Thursday 21st August.

Racing will start at 5:25pm, with gates opening at 3:25pm. The last race will be at 8:00pm.

Tickets can be bought online until 5pm on Wednesday 20th August. Tickets are priced at £18 for the Paddock Enclosure and £12 for the Course Enclosure. There will also be tickets available to buy at the gate on the day.
