Exeter artist Leo Jamelli shines a spotlight on the nation’s unpaid carers

Exeter-based illustrator-animator Leo Jamelli is collaborating with University of Exeter academics Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer and Dr Catriona McKenzie on an emotive contemporary art project entitled Spotlight on Care.

He's created a hand-drawn animation of an unpaid carer from Exeter which will be projected onto the Exeter Phoenix after dark in late October. The two-storey high projection will celebrate the millions who work around the clock caring for family and friends at home. An Exeter College art graduate has been the inspiration behind one of lockdown’s more unique art trends.

Since the Government’s lockdown of the country in March, a number of artists have been looking for an outlet for their creative flair and have taken to recreating classic pieces of art from the comfort of their own home using photography.

But Anna Grayson, from Teignmouth, has been producing work like this for years, having originally experimented with this photographic art style while studying an Access to Higher Education Art course with Exeter College in 2012....

Exeter cartoonist Ross Hendrick has recently completed his latest work, a comic book which humorously yet thoughtfully documents the struggles with social anxiety.

Ross, who has previously worked for such publications as The Beano, Viz and the Express & Echo, is the creator of a popular webcomic called Socially Awkward Misfit. The protagonist is a character called Sam (an acronym of Socially Awkward Misfit) who is loosely based on Ross's own life.

Exeter artist in heats for Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year 2018

Artist Greg Mason (57) from Exeter has been chosen from hundreds to compete against eight artists and alongside a further 50 “wildcard” artists in the fourth heat of this year’s Landscape Artist of the Year series, produced by award winning production company Storyvault Films.

The programme started on Tuesday 16th October on Sky Arts at 8pm, and Greg appears in the fourth heat which goes out on 6th November. It is hosted by new co-presenter - actor and art-lover Stephen Mangan alongside Joan Bakewell.

Dartmoor artist Shirley Kirkcaldy is celebrating after her work has been selected to be represented by a new Devon gallery.

The Tidal Gallery, which opens at Victoria Place, The Promenade, Kingsbridge, on July 22 will be exhibiting eight of Shirley’s latest landscapes and seascapes.

Devon artist raises £10,000 for special care babies

When Devon artist Jennie Rhodes was asked to create a picture in aid of the Torbay Special Care Baby Unit and Exeter Neonatal Unit, little did she realise the units’ tiny tots would play a major part in her design, which raised an amazing £10,000 at a charity auction.

Jennie’s aim was to produce a picture that was not only unique but also relevant to the babies cared for at the units, so she enlisted the help of Vanessa Diamond, Ward Sister at Torbay Hospital’s Special Baby Care Unit.

Preparations for one of the South West’s largest exhibitions, the Rathbones Exeter Art Show hosted at the Maynard School, are gaining pace with well over 100 nationally and locally acclaimed artists signed up already.
