Exeter charity gets back on its feet after office fire

Surf Life Saving GB, a charity of more than 6,000 volunteers helping to make the country’s beaches safer places, is celebrating moving into its new offices following a fire in Exeter’s Southernhay three weeks ago (2nd November).

A fire in the ground floor of its shared office building in Southernhay, meant Surf Life Saving GB’s national headquarters were deemed unsafe and the charity was effectively made immediately homeless.

Nobel Laureates and world renowned scientists will gather on 9 December 2012 in Stockholm for the inaugural Nobel Week Dialogue, and University of Exeter philosopher of science Professor John Dupré will be among them.

The one-day meeting, on the theme of The Genetic Revolution and its Impact on Society, will take place the day before this year's Nobel Prize award ceremony as a special celebration of the 50th anniversary of the award of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins.

Road conditions improving but concerns ahead

Conditions are improving today across Devon's major road network, but highways engineers are concerned that sub zero temperatures later in the week will further compound damage to the network.

Highways teams have been out again early this morning, scouting the major road network, identify problems and clearing up.

In Barnstaple, the A377 has been closed due to flooding, as is the A399 due to a minor landslide.

Citizens Advice survey to hold payday lenders to account

As the new payday lending customer charter is launched, Citizens Advice Bureaux across the country are today releasing new figures demonstrating a worrying increase in the number of serious debt cases relating to payday loans.

The Citizens Advice service has seen a ten-fold increase in the proportion of clients receiving casework help with multiple debts which included a payday loan debt in the last four years. In the first quarter of 2009/10 only one per cent of CAB debt casework clients had at least one payday loan and in the same quarter last year this had risen to four per cent...

Woman killed by tree in Exeter was living in a tent

This was the scene of the tragic incident in which a woman was killed by a falling tree in Exeter during last night's storms.

Police were today carrying out an investigation and prepare a report for the coroner.

The 21-year-old victim died and two men, aged 27 and 35, were injured when the tree came down shortly before midnight.. There are no further details regarding injuries at this time.

The woman was treated at the scene but died later in hospital. The tragedy happened at around 11.50pm yesterday on Western Way, near to junction with Barnfield Road in the city...

Dozens of vehicles stuck in floodwater across the county

Fire crews in Devon and Somerset have attended 51 incidents involving vehicles stuck in floodwater in the last 24 hours alone.

Crews have been called to 550 incidents in total over the same period with more rain expected on Sunday evening.

Fire officers are asking residents not to drive through floodwater, as they could be putting themselves or others in danger. Attending incidents which could be prevented may also divert fire crews from other incidents where lives are at risk.
