Ancient South Devon boundary wall saved

National Trust has been able to carry out extensive repair work to dry stone walls around East Soar Farm near Salcombe. Funded through Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, these boundary walls are over 200 years old.

Contractor Mark Newman Stonework has been working with his team for three months, repairing and rebuilding in total over 350m of wall. Some of the work has been on some very steep cliffs where the wall has collapsed over time and has been a challenge for the team to work on, particularly in the recent weather.

Maldives: Male tense as protest follows arrest of former President

Hundreds of protesters have gathered in Male, the capital of the Maldives, following the arrest on Tuesday morning of former President and leader of the Maldives Democratic Party, Mohamed Nasheed.

Photographs shared by sources in Male show demonstrators being arrested and put in police vans. A heavy police presence, with officers in riot gear has been reported.

Protesters have reportedly tipped a government vehicle over, as clashes intensify.

Prank puts lives at risk in Honiton

Offenders put the lives of police officers at risk by tampering with road signs on a blind bend near Honiton. The culprits dragged two large temporary triangular warning signs and sandbags into the middle of the A30 near Yarcombe in the early hours of Saturday (2 March). The signs had been by the side of the road on a blind bend in a wooded area at Hilltop. A police unit and ambulance on a 999 call to help a person with medical difficulties had to take emergency action to avoid a collision. Insurer launches horse transport safety campaign

South West insurer Cornish Mutual has launched a campaign to improve the safety of horses during transport. Called HorseSafe, the campaign is being run in partnership with the specialist animal rescue team at Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service. Study finds disabled employees are more likely to be attacked and bullied at work

Employees with disabilities are twice as likely to be attacked at work and experience much higher rates of insults, ridicule and intimidation, a new study has found.

Research from the universities of Plymouth and Cardiff found people with physical or psychological disabilities or long-term illness reported higher rates of 21 types of ill-treatment than did other workers. This included higher levels of physical and verbal abuse from managers and colleagues, but also from customers and clients they came into contact with.
