Exeter YMCA Dartmoor Walk raises over £2,500

Exeter YMCA saw fantastic success for their annual ‘Y-Walk’ event on Saturday 1 June, as a group of more than 40 trekked 11 miles from Okehampton Camp to Postbridge. The participants raised a fantastic £2,590, which will help further the YMCA’s work of providing accommodation and support to homeless young people.

As the summer approaches, people of all ages have the chance to find out what Exeter College offers them.

The Higher Education and Adult Learning Fair, at Hele Road 4 July, 5-8pm, is the ideal opportunity for people 19 and over to find out about learning new skills, meeting new people and gaining new qualifications, as well as finding out about the university-level courses at the college. Shrinking pay sees £5.7bn lost from South West economy

The value of the South West’s overall pay packet has fallen by 10% since 2007, according to a TUC analysis published today (Tuesday) to launch its new pay campaign: Britain Needs A Pay Rise. The TUC analysis of official figures shows that on the eve of the recession in 2007 workers across the South West were earning a total of £57bn (in 2012 prices). Industrial action affecting French air traffic control services may result in disruption to flights departing from and arriving at Exeter Airport until Friday 14 June.

South West tops the leader board for householders installing solar

Latest Ofgem figures reveal that over the last year the South West has topped the ‘league table’ for households installing solar panels, with more than 15,000 confirmed installations and around 57 MW installed capacity. This compares to the next closest region, the south east with 13,000 followed by the east midlands with just over 12,000 installations. Ellen Rodger, director of Exeter-based renewable energy installer SunGift Energy, has won the title of Young Director of the Year in the Institute of Directors (IoD) South West Business Awards.

Ellen, 28, wowed the judges with her exemplary business record, which includes helping SunGift grow from a small renewable energy business into a successful limited company with a turnover of over £8 million, employing more than 30 employees. Local roofer ordered to pay £2,000 compensation

An Exeter roofer has been ordered to pay £2,000 compensation after carrying out work described by an expert building surveyor as being of an “exceptionally poor standard”.

Appearing at Exeter Magistrates Court this week, 42-year-old John Isaacs of J&H Roofing Services pleaded guilty to one offence under the ‘professional diligence’ requirements of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, in a prosecution brought by Devon & Somerset Trading Standards Service.

Autism as an asset in the workplace - a talk by Robyn Steward

Author, consultant and trainer Robyn Steward, one of the UK’s leading experts on autism, will be speaking at a free breakfast seminar hosted by award-winning Exeter business Brain-In-Hand.

Robyn Steward is an international speaker, an ambassador for the National Autistic Society and recently hosted her own programme on BBC Radio 4.

New local energy system could heat Exeter

A new study has shown that a system of local electricity generation and a network of underground hot water pipes can be developed to heat buildings in Exeter. The increased efficiency of the system can lead to lower energy prices and a reduction of 11,000 tonnes per year in the City’s CO2 emissions.
