The Future of Exeter's Walk-In Centres

I recently took up an invitation from North, East & West Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) to attend a “Have Your Say” community engagement event to help them look at the way they/we use out 2 Walk-In Centres (WIC) in Exeter – one attached to the Accident & Emergency Department at RD&E, the other on Sidwell Street in the city centre.

They wanted to know about how to make sure that we have the right level of service, in the right place, at the right time. And probably at the right price (but we’ll come to that later).

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Authority members will consider a consultation report and vote on proposals to meet a significant Government grant reduction, on 10 July at the Service Headquarters in Exeter.

The Service is looking at managing significant on-going budget cuts, now anticipated to be around £8m by 2015, following the Spending Review announcement last week. Proposals aimed at providing an affordable and effective service, without removing fire stations, fire engines or making compulsory redundancies, were developed for public consultation earlier this year. The...

Make like a pencil and get the lead out

A young boy asked his mother what he should do in order to be a success when he grew up. The mother thought for a moment, and then told her son to bring her a pencil. Puzzled, the boy found a pencil and gave it to her.

“If you want to do good,” she said, “you have to be just like this pencil.”

“What does that mean?” her son asked.

“First,” she said, “you’ll be able to do a lot of things, but not on your own. You have to allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.

“Second, you’ll have to go through a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it...
