Weather is a national obsession and in Exeter we are fortunate to have the National Meteorological Library and Archive on our doorstep.

Here you can view the national memory of the weather, including a wide range of fascinating instruments and artefacts.

On display is an early barometer which belonged to the founder of the UK Met Office Admiral FitzRoy and the first ever published newspaper weather forecast which appeared in The Times on 1 August 1861.

Buckfast Abbey hosts ‘Shadowlands’ marking 50 years since CS Lewis’s death

CS Lewis is remembered this year in Shadowlands, a new production by the Unleashed Theatre Company, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death.

Hosted by Buckfast Abbey, as part of its regular programme of artistic events, they have commissioned the Unleashed Theatre Company, made up of gifted and enthusiastic people drawn from Baptist, Anglican, Catholic & Pentecostal churches from across South Devon to produce a high quality drama which entertains but also raises difficult issues concerning the Christian faith.

Sales director at Aspect Windows is awarded Passivhaus Design Consultant status

IPCC Thomas Orchard investigation file goes to Crown Prosecution Service

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has submitted a file of evidence in the Thomas Orchard investigation to the Crown Prosecution Service.

On 3 October 2012, Mr Orchard was restrained and arrested in Exeter on suspicion of a public order offence and was taken at about 11.10am by police van to custody at Heavitree Road Police Station.

Just over an hour later Mr Orchard was taken by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital as he was unresponsive in his cell. Mr Orchard subsequently died on 10 October 2012.

Woman's body found at the foot of cliffs in Lympstone

Exmouth Coastguard report that a full team were called to action at 7.56pm last night following the report of a person found at the foot of cliffs, just North of Darlings Rock, Lympstone.

The Coastguard reported on Facebook: "As we arrived on the scene it was confirmed by Paramedics and Police that the person was deceased.

"After Police had concluded their on scene investigations and due to the state of the tide, Exmouth Coastguards requested Exmouth Inshore Lifeboat to assist with the Recovery of the deceased.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this time."...

Exmouth RNLI called out three times on a windy and rainy Sunday

Crew volunteers from Exmouth RNLI were called to the aid of a yacht, two speed boats and a missing kite surfer on Sunday 28 July. Relief Coxswain Matt Simpson from Ilfracombe RNLI led the yacht rescue in Lyme Bay.

At 2.05pm, Brixham coastguard initially tasked the inshore lifeboat to the aid of Misty, a yacht in difficulty one and a half miles off Maer Rocks. The all-weather lifeboat, Margaret Jean stood by in heavy rain and force five/six wind conditions whilst the inshore lifeboat, George Bearman attempted to reach the casualty.

Bats, moths and dragonflies get summer holidays off to a flying start

The summer holidays got off to a ‘flying’ start for local youngsters when EDDC’s Countryside Team joined other local organisations with a rural theme at the annual Natural Seaton Festival.
