Free support at Living with Diabetes Day

There are only a few spaces left for a free support event for people with Type 2 diabetes in Exeter on October 22 from 9.30am – 4.30pm. The ‘Living with Diabetes Day’ is a one-day event run by Diabetes UK and will take place at Exeter racecourse.

This event is designed for people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the last few years or those needing the basic information on how to manage the condition. The full programme includes sessions on what Type 2 diabetes is, how it affects the body and the healthcare services available in the area.

Run the London Marathon for Hospiscare

Runners keen to enter next year’s London Marathon can apply to local Exeter based charity Hospiscare for a chance to take part.

Hospiscare has five golden bond places which are guaranteed entries available after the race has closed to the general public.

“We are very excited to have these places,” said Celia Wilkinson, Hospiscare running and challenge co-ordinator.

“We have been trying since 2001 to get golden bond places and now we have five places for the next five years.”

Devon law firm top performer in influential student guide

A Devon solicitor’s firm has been named as one of the best for work/life balance in the country, according to an influential student guide to the law. Stephens Scown LLP has also picked up the most awards of any firm in the region in the latest Lex 100 results, which allow trainee solicitors to give candid comments about their firms.

Exeter-based Blue Chip Holidays, the South West’s largest supplier of four-and five-star self catering properties, has announced that it has been appointed as sole agent for Una St Ives, a new £16 million holiday resort run by resort management specialists Escape UK.

The five-star resort, based in Carbis Bay new St Ives, will comprise 123 properties, providing a choice of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties to rent.

The Devon Association of Local Councils has welcomed the County Council’s plans to enlist the support of local communities to help maintain Devon’s 8,000 mile road network.

Devon County Council is looking to recruit an army of community Road Warden volunteers from town and parish councils – similar to its successful Snow Warden scheme. The volunteers would undertake minor maintenance work which the County Council is currently unable to do.

Penn Inn beam lift recommences

The lifting in of the beams for the Penn Inn flyover recommences today (Wednesday 15 October).

In advance of the overnight beam lifting operations there will be some lane closures on the roundabout until 3pm to facilitate preparation works and setting up of the large crane.

The remaining two north span braced pairs of beams are scheduled to be lifted into place during overnight operations from 9pm tonight and also tomorrow (16 October).

Politicians Pull the Plug on excessive electricity use

Politicians from across the spectrum joined community group Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) on Sunday 12 October to encourage high street shops to pull the plug and reduce their energy use.

Rosie Denham (Labo ur), Diana Moore (Green) and Dom Morris (Conservative) took the challenge to go 24 hours without any electricity, and spent the afternoon visiting shops to ask them to unplug anything not being used.
