One of the larger GP surgeries in Exeter has installed a new automated telephone service which enables patients to order their repeat prescriptions 24/7, even when the surgery is closed.

Mount Pleasant Health Centre in Mount Pleasant has introduced the system to help reduce call congestion and to make it easier for patients to order their repeat prescriptions.

To access the service, patients need to contact reception for a six digit PIN which can be changed to a more memorable number once they have logged on for the first time. Patients can then call the surgery’s usual number (01392 255 722) at any time and select option one to submit their prescription request. The request is reviewed and actioned by the relevant doctor.

With around 16,500 patients on the practice register, reception is constantly busy. The new repeat prescription service has been introduced to complement other measures designed to improve patient access.

“We would strongly urge our patients to use the repeat prescription service as it not only makes it easier for patients to request their prescriptions, but it also helps to reduce call congestion which can be a problem for the surgery, particularly at peak call times,” comments Julie Croze, Practice Manager at Mount Pleasant.

“Whilst we have an online service for ordering repeat prescriptions already in place, we felt that this service would be more appropriate for those who don’t have access to the internet, or who aren’t confident using a computer. It‘s also easier to use when on the go, rather than waiting until you are able to go online.”

Patients will need to allow 48 hours before collection if picking up their prescription from the health centre, or 72 hours if collecting it from a pharmacy.

The repeat prescription service has been developed by unified communications specialist Voice Connect who work with GP surgeries and NHS organisations across the UK. Voice Connect also developed the automated appointment booking system Patient Partner which is in use at over 800 surgeries in Britain. For more information, visit www.voiceconnect.co.uk.
