Night shelter proving a life saver during cold weather

A “potentially life-saving” night shelter allowing rough sleepers to come in out of the cold, is proving popular in Exeter as night-time temperatures drop below zero.

Exeter City Council’s Night Shelter – renamed The Junction and situated in the former Spice Island restaurant in Magdalen Street – has been packed out over the last couple of nights as rough sleepers escape the bitter nights on the street.

The City Council activated its Severe Weather Protocol (SWEP) on Wednesday, with the temperature dropping below zero for three consecutive nights.

Alex Wilson (piano) and Alex Poulton (baritone) perform music of the early 20th Century, including rarely heard music by Ivor Gurney, Benjamin Britten and Frederick Septimus Kelly. Come to hear some music that hasn’t been performed in over 100 years in advance of a Toccata Classics CD release of previously unrecorded piano works by F.S.Kelly later in the year.

Entry is Free, with a retiring collection in aid of the Music Room Restoration Fund.

Man arrested after Woodbury Salterton incidents

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with incidents at Woodbury Salterton on New Year’s Day.

Police were called at 8.05am following a report of a man in a mask acting suspiciously in the village.

The man, who was in possession of a large blade, was seen outside an isolated property. He ran from the property after being seen by the occupants.

He was seen near another location in the village a short time later.
