People of all ages will be given a fascinating insight into some of the pioneering research taking place at the University of Exeter’s Living Systems Institute at a special public event.

Some of Exeter’s world-leading scientists will host a number of lively, fun, and interesting family-friendly events at the LSI Opening Evening, held on June 20th from 5-9pm.

The event, which marks the 2nd anniversary of the LSI’s official opening, will feature a series of short talks outlining some of the innovative research taking place at the Institute.

Child Bereavement UK supports families both when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, and when a child faces bereavement. The charity also trains professionals such as doctors, teachers and midwives to help them better understand and meet the needs of grieving families.

A 92 year-old grandmother from Devon has been declared the fourth and final winner of Nominate A Smile 2019.

Pam Timson, a stroke-survivor and all-round star, has been putting smiles on the faces of those around her for the best part of a century and is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon!

Born in London Paddington in 1927, Pam initially worked for London Transport as an Accounts Clerk before joining Vispring to make aeroplane wings during World War II.

Take up of broadband in Devon and Somerset increases

There has been a big rise in the number of homes and businesses taking up superfast broadband services thanks to the Connecting Devon and Somerset programme. New figures show take-up is nearly 60%, higher than the national average and a 5% rise on the previous quarter, which means around 180,000 homes and businesses are now using superfast services over new or improved networks funded by CDS. Around 18,000 more homes and businesses have taken advantage of the new connections in the last quarter. The rise since spring, 2018, is now over 50,000. Parking offer to support local economy and spread the peak of Saturday shopping

People coming into Exeter on Thursday evenings will now be able to park for free in the City Council’s three pay-on-foot muti-storey car parks.

The offer, which starts tomorrow (Thursday 20 June), has been brought in to support Thursday late night shopping and the wider evening economy. It is also aimed at spreading the peak of Saturday shopping and easing congestion on the roads.

Exeter Chiefs newcomer Stuart Hogg won't have to wait long for a reunion with former club Glasgow Warriors after the two clubs were drawn alongside one another in today's Heineken Champions Cup draw in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Volunteers needed to help map Exeter's tree canopy

Volunteers are being sought to help map Exeter’s tree canopy.

Exeter has higher than average tree coverage across the city. That figure was 24.5% when last mapped in 2006.

Thirteen years later and it is reckoned that coverage has gone down slightly and is now threatened by new pests and diseases, as well as development and climate change.

That’s why the City Council is working closely with Treeconomics based at the University to properly map Exeter’s current tree canopy.
