Second year history student Matt Morley has beaten off competition from more than 160 businesses to reach the final stage of the Born Global business competition and has been awarded second place with his company, TickBox.

St James' Park packed for Christmas carols

This Monday (9th December) saw a wonderfully festive celebration in St James' Park.

It promised to be one of the UK’s biggest carol services, transforming the home of Exeter’s football club into a hub of festive cheer.

The stadium filled up in a matter of minutes, as more than 3,500 locals and students flocked to sing a selection of traditional carols and hear about the meaning of Christmas. It was a real joy to see so many people, of all ages, wrapped up and enjoying themselves (and the free mince pies)!

The Chancellor has announced that all limits on university recruitment will be lifted in 2015. This unexpected decision means that universities will be allowed to recruit as many students as they want to.

Describing it as an “arbitrary cap on aspiration”, George Osborne announced that an extra 30,000 places at English universities will be created in 2014-15. The students and staff of Exeter University will be putting on their annual Christmas craft fair tomorrow (Friday 6th December) in the Forum building, from 12-4pm.

Come along and support your friends, colleagues, staff and the university in their largest event so far. Music and food and a Farmer's Market will be on-site too!

Guild-University partnership recognised by Higher Education Academy

The strong working partnership that exists between the Students’ Guild and the University of Exeter has been recognised by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

In 2013 the HEA launched its first round of Partnership Awards to celebrate successful partnership working in UK higher education. Thanksgiving celebrations on Streatham Campus

The University of Exeter is holding a range of activties tomorrow to celebrate American Thanksgiving.

Celebrations will include a traditonal Thanksgiving lunch for staff and students and a 'touch' American football game on the piazza (supported by the University's cheerleaders).

There will also be an all-American themed harvest festival eating area where a traditional two course Thanksgiving feast of roast turkey or nut roast with gravy, creamed potato, buttered sweet corn and other vegetables, followed by pumpkin pie or American cheesecake, will be available....

Nearly a third of Exeter students are privately educated

Recent research done by The Sutton Trust reveals that 28% of students at Exeter University are privately educated.

While investigating the education gap between poor and privileged students at English universities, the Trust found that, unsurprisingly, Oxford and Cambridge had the highest percentage of privately educated students, with 46.6% and 42.7% respectively.

This contrasts with London's South Bank University, which came last in the listing. Nearly a quarter of the students there received free school meals at school, compared with a tiny 1% at Exeter. This suggests...

South West Water suggests potential price rise

The Government has spoken out against a potential rise in South West Water's bills that could see over £20 being added to students' water bills.

The current average water charge in the South West is already £111-£499 above the national average, despite a £50 Government subsidy for customers in the region.

Adam Isaac helps Barnstaple get festive

Exeter singing star Adam Isaac helped the people of Barnstaple begin their festive celebrations by performing at their Christmas lights switch on.

Adam, who was mentored by Sir Tom Jones in the 2012 series of The Voice, performed material from his own album Train Tracks and also covered tracks by artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Eurythmics. Girl band Stooshe and Britain’s Got Talent stars The Luminites also performed.
