Running from Wednesday 29th January to Saturday 1st February at Exeter Northcott Theatre, the University of Exeter's musical theatre society, Footlights, presents a fantastic performance of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.

A modern-day take on the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, this is one of the most well-loved and well-known musicals of all time. Footlights handles the atmosphere, accents and tension of Upper West Side New York beautifully, bringing it to the Northcott stage in a completely believable performance.

The musical tells the immortal story of two star-crossed lovers caught in a war of rival ethnic gangs. As the New York Jets rumble with the Puerto Rican Sharks in Manhattan's West Side, Maria and Tony seek a place where their romance can thrive. The hostility between the gangs quickly escalates, and it soon becomes clear that there will not be a happy ending.

Brilliantly choreographed by Aaron McCrossan, the show is full of laughter, sadness and unforgettable music, including award-winning numbers such as “Somewhere”, “Cool”, “América” and “Maria”. Clearly there are challenges in producing such an iconic musical, but the director Jordan Murphy said that “with the talented cast of Footlights, West Side Story will be the biggest show the society has ever put on, and I'm very proud to be part of such an incredible team”.

Indeed, the acting, dancing and vocal talents of the cast were remarkable, particularly the parts of Tony and Maria, sung by Nick Kenchington and Amy McIntosh. Likewise, the orchestra played beautifully, filling the packed Northcott theatre with emotion. Suitable for ages 14+, this musical is a true delight to go and see. You will certainly come away singing!
