Let there be light! Exeter Scientists urging us to Race for Life

This group of researchers from Devon are leading the way in transforming how cancers are detected and treated by harnessing the power of light.

The team, who receive funding through Cancer Research UK, are encouraging people to take part in Race for Life this summer and help fund more life-saving research.

Their innovative use of Raman Spectroscopy, which is based upon the interaction of light with the chemical bonds within a material, is forging a better understanding of treating cancers earlier.

Charities in Exeter could get their hands on a share of £100,000 in the big Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation giveaway.

The Charitable Foundation supports registered charities which help to alleviate poverty, improve health and save lives with donations from £250 to £2,000 that support a specific purpose.

Yorkshire Building Society members can recommend their favourite charity for a donation by visiting their local branch, on the High Street.

Exeter law firm Browne Jacobson has announced Devon based ‘Pete’s Dragons’ as its charity for 2017-18.

Pete’s Dragons, which was founded in 2014, provides bereavement support through various projects to people affected by suicide loss across the South West region.

The charity offers practical advice, comforting hampers, financial assistance, holistic therapies, family fun days, grief recovery and respite at the charity’s sea-side holiday retreat.

This year’s exciting annual Exeter Charity Motorbike Show is on Sunday 6 August. Everyone is welcome, whether you ride a motorbike or just fancy a fun afternoon out.

This is the fourth year the event has happened. There will be hundreds of motorbikes of all types from trikes and cruisers to sports bikes and the more vintage two wheeled machines turning up to help raise money for charity. Dr. Sarah Jackson has long been a supporter of popular Devon charity Hospiscare , and now holds the position of trustee. But this September will see Sarah go further still as she plans the challenge of completing her first half-ironman to raise funds for the charity.

A team of walkers from leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, raised £725 when they took part in the Exeter Legal Walk on the 6th June.

The Exeter Legal Walk celebrates the continued work of the legal profession and advice sector in protecting people’s rights and promoting equal access to justice for all. For the second year running, Educated Recruitment hiked an impressive 19 miles on the Templer Way Walk for Macmillan Cancer Support on Saturday. Despite the very wet weather, the team walked from Haytor Rock to Shaldon in just under 5 in a half hours. Tide was not on their side resulting to the team having to walk 3 miles waist deep in water to complete the final leg of the walk! Local lady Wendy from Chudleigh will be hosting her annual, fun-filled street party on Saturday September 2nd.

This year she will be raising money for a charity close to her heart, Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Wendy, owner of the Bishop Lacy Inn on Fore Street organises the community event to bring everyone together for a day of celebration that anyone can come along to free of charge.

Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir are delighted that they will be performing at Exeter Cathedral on 5th August at 7.30pm in support of Devon Air Ambulance, who are celebration 25 years of service.
