SW small business eye share of nation’s £5bn Christmas Spend

Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

In wider positive economic signs, new data from the Small Business Saturday campaign also found Brits could spend over £23 billion in total across the UK this festive season, representing a nominal 16% year-on-year spending rise.

A Devon-based social entrepreneur is encouraging other social enterprises to sign up to courses to help their development.

Drama therapy graduate Amerie Rose and co-Director Samantha Wraith, founded Encounter Theatre and Therapy in Exeter in 2014, having received support to start their social enterprise as they looked to combine a love of the arts and helping others.

Last Saturday, Vospers partnered with Heart Radio and took to Princesshay Square to celebrate the upcoming opening of their new £12m supersite in Matford, Exeter.

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has extended its long-standing sponsorship of Exeter Chiefs rugby club through the 2018/19 season.

For the ninth consecutive year, the distinctive Flybe logo again features on the back of the players’ shirts, the Exeter-based airline having been a Chiefs shirt sponsor since their first year in the top division in 2010. Marie Cleave, Company Director started the business in her home single headedly providing schools in the Teignbridge and Torbay area with supply teaching staff. Since then, she has opened an office in Newton Abbot with 5 members of staff.

Waste operator fined for illegal waste disposal in Devon countryside

Businessman Roger Baker has been ordered to pay more than £6,650 for illegally disposing of thousands of tonnes of waste on farmland near Exeter. The case was brought by the Environment Agency.

In 2016 Mr Baker imported 7,514 tonnes of inert waste on a field at Poltimore, Exeter under the guise of ‘drainage’ works. This amount of waste far exceeded that permitted under an authorisation, issued by the Environment Agency, known as a U1 waste exemption.
