Following the fire that devastated Devon Contract Waste’s HQ in March 2017, the company is gearing up for the next phase of its growth with the development of a new HQ. This month, work begins on the company’s new 1,300m2 headquarters on Marsh Barton Industrial Estate in Exeter. Approved by Devon County Council officers in September, the new premises will be built to an improved, sustainable design to house new facilities and achieve an internationally-recognised BREEAM sustainability rating of Excellent.
Scheduled to complete in the company’s 30th anniversary year in 2019, Devon Contract Waste’s new headquarters will handle up to 75,000 tonnes of mixed waste and recycling each year. The space-efficient facility will also house a secure data destruction centre, capable of processing up to six tonnes of confidential waste per hour; an on-site vehicle maintenance workshop; and a two-level office suite to accommodate the growing team. In addition to sustainably sourced materials, the building will include up to 200 solar panels to supply the building’s electricity needs, electric vehicle charging points, air source heat pumps, low-energy LED lighting and energy efficient glass.
Devon Contract Waste managing director, Simon Almond, said: “We have experienced unprecedented growth in the past year; we had no idea that such positivity could emerge from so much destruction, but the key changes we have made to the heart of our business following last year’s fire have allowed Devon Contract Waste to step into a new era. The business has gone from strength to strength: making acquisitions, welcoming new customers, expanding our fleet and investing in the latest technology to deliver improved services to our customers.
“With our 30th anniversary approaching next year, it will be the perfect time to move into our new home and launch the next phase of our business’ growth. This has been a long and emotional journey for myself and the whole team. We’re incredibly excited that rebuilding work is finally underway. Devon Contract Waste has been thoroughly tested but we’re looking ahead to a bright future.”
Devon Contract Waste is a leading provider of commercial waste management services in Devon and bordering areas of Cornwall and Somerset. The company collects mixed waste from its clients in a single vehicle, reducing the number of journeys made and minimising its CO2 emissions. Each time a bin is emptied, around 3.04kg of CO2 is emitted, so collecting waste in a single bin rather than separating it into different containers reduces CO2 emissions. Devon Contract Waste was the first company to introduce Zero to Landfill solutions to the south west region, ensuring that all materials that can be recycled, are; and that nothing ends up in landfill.
