Second round of Exeter’s rare books up for adoption

Exeter Library’s Adopt a Book initiative has launched a second series of ancient books for adoption, following the return of the first two fully restored items to Exeter’s Special Collections Archives.

The Adopt a Book initiative was launched in December 2016 by Exeter Library senior supervisor Joanne Cousins. Now, six months on, the scheme has raised more than £3,000 and seven out of the 10 original books have been adopted in full, meaning that work on the restoration of these items can be completed to keep them safe for future generations to enjoy.

Community Transport Award winners honoured for dedication

Awards have been presented to 10 proud Community Transport volunteers and staff members from across the county at a special ceremony.

Devon County Council marked the 18th anniversary of its annual Community Transport Awards at County Hall last Thursday night (15 June).

The awards, sponsored by local printers Pollards, with coachbuilders GM Coachwork Group sponsoring the prizes for the awards, aim to recognise outstanding contributions to community transport in Devon.

Public Health leaders in Devon are supporting a national campaign urging men who spend a lot of time outdoors to protect themselves against the sun, to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Richard Earnshaw, 33, from Honiton died in hospital following a serious collision at Heathfield Cross, near Colyton, at around 3.45pm on Sunday 11 June.

Tom Pryor from Lynpstone is taking on an incredible charity challenge in aid of Hospiscare.

Tom (20) and three friends [Alec Bain, Sam Prestwich and James Prestwich], all aged under 21 are embarking on the bike ride of a lifetime on 3rd July and cycling the length of Europe from North to South [Arctic Circle to Southern Spain].

The Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging local people in Exeter to unite against dementia and become a Dementia Friends Champion this month. People can book now to attend a touring induction day that is coming to Exeter on Wednesday 28 June 2017.

The day-long session is part of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme, which is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation acts, thinks and talks about the condition.
