Business confidence rebounds following Brexit vote

Business confidence in the South West rose to an 18-month high in the last six months, according to the latest Business in Britain report from Lloyds Bank, based on data gathered after the snap election had been called. The confidence index – an average of respondents’ expected sales, orders and profits over the next six months – increased to 27 per cent, up from January’s score of 17 per cent and from 10 per cent immediately following the EU referendum vote. Award-winning authors and broadcasters headline Budleigh’s 9th annual Literary Festival

The line-up of best-selling authors and budding literary stars for the annual Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival has been announced.

Now in its ninth year, the themes of the 2017 Festival will be nature, wildlife and history, including family history and memoir. There will also be magical events for children to help mark the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book.

Exeter Punks Picnic is a three day music event taking place in August. Organised by Old Hat Promotions, this is the first year such an event has been held in Exeter.

New tapestry reflects the words that mean the most to hospital chaplains past and present

The favourite quotes and sayings of Chaplains who have served the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital over the last 21 years have been carefully crafted into a new piece of artwork for the hospital’s chaplaincy centre thanks to a donation from the League of Friends.

The new ‘Threads and Ripples’ tapestry, by renowned Devon textile artist Jacqui Parkinson, will be displayed on the wall in the chaplaincy centre to offer comfort and solace to those who choose to visit the space.

Exmouth fly tipper fined for dumping domestic waste

An Exmouth woman has been fined more than £1,400 for fly tipping in a successful prosecution brought by Environmental Health Officers from East Devon District Council.

Jill O'Donnell who was living at Waverley Road, Exmouth when the offence took place pleaded guilty and was fined £1,451. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £145. Exeter Magistrates reduced her fine by 10% after taking her circumstances to pay into account.

The magistrates were told that Ms O'Donnell dumped more than 20 bags of domestic waste and some old carpets in the service...

Entire Seaton Down Hoard on public display for first time

On Saturday 1 July, the 22,888 coins of the Seaton Down Hoard will be on public display for the first time.

The coins were buried in the ground on Seaton Down around AD 350 and discovered in November 2013 by metal detectorist Laurence Egerton. They will be on permanent display in the Making History gallery at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM).

Conservation work began on the coins in July 2016. Talks, Roman Roadshows, museum events, special workshops, gallery tours and other events have been enjoyed by over 15,000 people from Devon and further...
