Bee creative at Devon Wildlife Trust’s family fun day

Devon Wildlife Trust is inviting families to ‘bee creative in the garden’ at a special wild bee family fun day next week. On August 3, the charity will be opening the gates to the Cricklepit Mill wildlife garden for a family event that aims to celebrate bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world. Children will have the chance to create a range of bee themed craft items, including alder bees to hang in the garden, bee mobiles, badge making and bee jewellery. Devon's country parks are top of the tree

Devon County Council’s (DCC) country parks have both been named as two of the best in Britain for the ninth time in succession.

The two DCC-managed parks, The Grand Western Canal Country Park, Mid Devon and Stover County Park, Teignbridge, have once again scooped the prestigious Green Flag Award 2017 from the charity, Keep Britain Tidy. They are listed among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that will receive the prestigious award, the mark of a quality park. Dementia researchers raise thousands for charity in epic bike challenge

Five dementia researchers at the University of Exeter have pedalled over an epic 350 miles from London to Paris, raising thousands of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society in a gruelling four day challenge.

The team has raised more than £11,000 towards their £12,000 target to boost the Society’s ground-breaking dementia research, and they still hope to achieve their goal. To donate, visit their Justgiving page.

Tread carefully: No excuse for being on the road with illegal tyres

Local police officers are out and about near Exeter this week to check that vehicles have safe and legal tyres fitted.

The maximum penalty for driving with defective tyres is three penalty points and a £2,500 fine…and that’s per tyre.

More importantly, defective tyres pose a danger to the driver and to other road users.

PC William Welch said: “The condition of tyres and vehicle handling go hand in hand. Tyres are the only points of contact between a vehicle and the road, and so affect braking, steering and grip.

Exmouth is Wheelie Great!

Exmouth will have a new temporary landmark on its horizon by the end of this week – a 28 metre high observation wheel with 20, six-seater gondolas which will offer a unique viewpoint over Exmouth, the Exe Estuary and out to sea.

The wheel is located on East Devon District Council land at Beach Gardens opposite the Pavilion Theatre and is operated by Somerset-based MI-Wheel. It opens for rides on Saturday 29 July. It will be on site for 28 days and the wheel operators are seeking planning permission for a further two week extension to mid-September.

New chartered surveyors announced at JLL's Exeter office

The Exeter office of leading property consultancy JLL has announced one new promotion and two newly qualified chartered surveyors.

The team has been strengthened after two of its staff, Adelle Moore and Kye Daniel, passed their Assessment of Professional Competence Exams to become qualified chartered surveyors.

In addition, Mark Walter, from the residential team, has been promoted to local director level from associate director.

Exeter College celebrates record breaking year with 1,000th Apprentice

Exeter College is celebrating a record breaking year by celebrating welcoming their 1,000th apprentice.

The 1,000th Apprentice is Jordanna Broom who is a higher engineering apprentice at the University of Exeter. Jordanna enjoyed her initial engineering training and has decided to pursue her career through one of the college’s higher level apprenticeships.

Off-duty Hospiscare nurse receives award for saving a life

In March 2016, Exeter Hospiscare nurse Daisy McLauchlan was travelling back from a weekend break on the Isle of Wight, when a call was sent out over the ship’s tannoy system asking for any doctors, nurses or first aiders on board to urgently make their way to the front of the vessel.
