Majority of people worried by their financial situations

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has released the results from its fifth economic well-being survey.

Citizens Advice Exeter Chief Executive Steve Barriball said: “A key finding is that more than half of those who responded to the survey, some 62%, said that they were worried about their financial position.

This is up significantly from 51% earlier in the year. Whilst income levels seem to have stabilised, with 61% of those responding saying their income levels remained the same, only 18% of respondents had seen their expenditure reduce.

Red ribbon opening for Mamhead’s £1.5 million slipway

Exmouth’s new £1.5 million Mamhead Slipway has been officially opened, restoring the vital maritime access to the town’s wonderful waterside after an absence of more than four years.

Larger and more practical than the previous structure, the new slipway on the River Exe reinstates the town’s maritime leisure tradition and will bring more business to the town. The majority of the work was funded by East Devon District Council with Devon County Council putting £275,000 in to the project.

Wildlife set to increase on the Maer

Following advice from the East Devon District Council Countryside team, the grassland on the Maer Local Nature Reserve in Exmouth will be cut less regularly in order to increase the wildlife and biodiversity on the site.

Devon’s Nursing Associate trainees start work towards pioneering new healthcare role

Dozens of trainees have started an exciting new pilot programme in hospitals and care homes across Devon, training in a new role to become Nursing Associates. Devon was selected as one of 11 pilot sites nationally and the only one in the south to develop the role. The Nursing Associate position is a new role alongside existing others, which is designed to bridge the gap between health and care support workers, who have a care certificate, and graduate registered nurses and offers opportunities for health care assistants to progress into nursing roles. Council Leader calls for urgent meeting to discuss Exeter’s transport issues

A council leader has called for an emergency meeting to discuss transport issues in Exeter after the city’s roads ground to a halt this week following a road traffic incident.

Exeter City Council Leader Pete Edwards has written to Devon County Council, the Police, Highways England, and Exeter Chamber of Trade and Commerce, calling for an urgent meeting to thrash out the problems.

Work due to start on new junction near Tiverton

Work on a new £5.7 million junction off the A361 near Tiverton is due to start next month (September).

Roads Minister Jesse Norman carried out a ceremonial turf cutting at the site earlier this week (1 August) to mark the announcement, as part of a whistle-stop tour of road schemes in the county.
