Traffic signals to be replaced at busy Exeter junction

Temporary traffic signals will be in place at a junction in Exeter from Wednesday 29 August while work is carried out to upgrade the lights.

Preparatory work is already underway at the junction of Heavitree Road/Polsloe Road/Barrack Road and Magdalen Road/Barrack Road, where the traffic lights have reached the end of their serviceable life.

The signals, poles and electrics will all be replaced, and cable ducting will also be repaired.

Stanley swept the board in broom dance contest at Dartmoor Folk Festival

A BROTHER and sister took the top honours at the 41st Dartmoor Folk Festival held at South Zeal near Okehampton from August 10-12.

Stanley Frangleton (10), from South Zeal, was the Dartmoor Broom Dance Champion while his sister, Ruth (14), was the Junior Dartmoor Step Dance Champion.

Dartmoor Broom dancing involves dancing over a broom.

Stanley said that he learned the dance at workshops held at the festival a few years ago and had been practising to perfect the dance.

New areas of the Exe Estuary protected for wildlife

Two new areas to protect wildlife on the Exe Estuary are being put in place this week.

Known as wildlife refuges, the areas are marked out with yellow ‘special mark’ buoys which have “WR” in black letters printed on them. People are being asked to avoid the areas, all year round at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve (NNR) and between15 September to 31 December at Exmouth Local Nature Reserve (LNR).

Cranbrook gears up for Tour of Britain

Young people across Cranbrook have brought new meaning to the term ‘recycling’ by creating an eye-catching and colourful town-wide public art display from old bikes.

In all 14 bikes have been painted, decorated and placed around the town – and now visitors are being challenged to find them all. The bikes have been decorated by members of the Cranbrook Youth Group, Youth Genesis and students from Cranbrook Education Campus and St Martins Primary School, with each bike painted in the colours of one of the competing teams. People can now refill their water bottles for free at Youth Hostels throughout Devon. There are 4 youth hostels throughout Devon where people can refill their water bottles. The leading youth charity, YHA (England and Wales), has joined Refill, a national free tap water initiative designed to reduce plastic pollution by making refilling water bottles as easy, convenient and cheap as possible. More than 15 local dogs celebrated Devon Loves Dogs’ first birthday on Saturday, with prizes, games and treats for dogs, as well as a specially-made dog birthday cake.

Devon Loves Dogs joined forces with Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust to take dogs and their owners on a guided, waggy walk around the Pebblebed Heaths to learn about the special wildlife there.
