Shoppers help choose Tesco Centenary Grants in Devon

Charities that enhance and often saves the lives of Devon people have received £50,000 to continue their amazing work.

The supermarket chain is marking its Centenary year with two special Bags of Help funding rounds, with a huge £100,000 funding pot in Devon.

The first of these special rounds concentrated on groups delivering health and wellbeing benefits. In first place, Devon Air Ambulance Trust has been awarded £25,000. In second place, HeadsUP Mental Health Awareness Limited has been awarded £15,000. In third place, Pete's Dragons has been awarded £10,000.

Samantha and team are celebrating today having scooped Gold for the Restaurant/Bistro Of The Year category in the prestigious Devon Tourism Awards last night, 28th November 2019. The 10th Devon Tourism Awards saw a record of 240 entries across 27 different categories, with 167 receiving judge visits as part of a comprehensive judging process, including Harry’s. Paignton Zoo has welcomed a new species – the wonderfully-named gentle lemur. There’s more than a little of the teddy bear about them, with their thick, grey-brown fur and beady amber eyes. The babies are said to be especially cute – and the zoo certainly hopes to see babies in due course.

The gentle lemur – more correctly, the Alaotran gentle lemur - is the only primate that lives entirely in marshy habitat. In the wild it can be found in reed beds around Lake Alaotra, in north east Madagascar.

But why the name? Are they really gentle? It depends who you ask. Gentle lemurs...

THG hosts South West Academy’s anniversary exhibition

THG kicks off 2020 by presenting exceptional work from the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts (SWAc) and an exciting programme of workshops and events.

The exhibition marks the start of the Academy’s 20th anniversary year and will feature work in a diverse range of media including paintings, sculpture, prints and photography.

South coast-based Hendy Group has been named Used Car Dealership of the Year for the second year running.

Its outstanding used car operations were recognised at the Car Dealer Used Car Awards 2019 which were presented this week by TV’s Mr Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer.

Public consultation on Cullompton relief road proposals

The latest round of public consultation on plans for a Cullompton town centre relief road will continue until Friday 20 December.

The relief road has been a long-standing aspiration of the town, having been included in Mid Devon’s Local Plan since 2011, in order to move traffic congestion away from the town centre.

Devon County Council is currently developing and finalising the design of the scheme and people are invited to have their say on the proposals.

Exeter Racecourse is encouraging racegoers to unleash their inner elf for a great cause at its raceday next Friday (December 6).

Elf Day is a festive-themed fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society, a charity supported by Jockey Club Racecourses, which encourages participants to get into the Christmas spirit and dress up as elves for the day.

This year’s festive event coincides with the raceday so anyone coming to the races dressed as an elf could win on the spot prizes, such as a pair of tickets to come racing, a bottle of prosecco or a case of Tribute Ale.
