Investec extends food bank support to Exeter

Investec has announced that it is extending its partnership with food banks across the UK and supplying food banks in 15 UK cities with essential supplies.

Aiming to feed around 3,800 people every week across the country, Investec will be supplying around 20,000 food items on a weekly basis to each of the 15 food banks, which will help support the wider 20 food banks and 63 distribution centres in those networks. This is in addition to the 18,000 food items supplied every week in east London, supporting hundreds of families in need.

DEVONIANS are being asked to donate any unwanted or surplus jigsaw puzzles they may have to the county’s elderly and vulnerable who remain housebound under the current Coronavirus restrictions (May 2020).

Guardian Homecare, operating in Exeter and surrounding areas, says many of its service users can’t afford to buy these items and they urgently need things to do during the lockdown.

New research released today has found that students in Exeter are struggling with sleep, leaving a significant impact on their mental health with over a quarter (27%) admitting to using alcohol to help them rest.

On-street parking enforcement due to resume

On-street parking enforcement will be gradually reinstated by Devon County Council.

Parking enforcement officers will initially be deployed to areas where issues with increasing numbers of visitors have been raised by communities, Police and local County Council members.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has launched a new online library offering people with sight loss in South West instant access to thousands of free books in formats they can read.

RNIB’s new platform already has more than 26,000 titles making it the UK's largest online library of Talking Books – the world’s first audiobooks, which were originally created by the charity for soldiers who were blinded in the First World War.

Maintenance on public rights of way will assist social distancing

Devon County Council’s public rights of way and its walking and cycling trails have been proving as popular as ever throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and essential maintenance on routes is continuing.

Seasonal vegetation cutting will start next week (Monday 18 May) as Public Rights of Way Wardens ensure that Devon’s network of paths and trails are kept open and are as clear as possible to assist with social distancing.

He’s a respected historian and archeologist with a number of BBC shows and books to his name, yet when I caught up with him he was in his garden shed… which also turns out to be his office.

Dr Sam Willis will be a familiar face to many TV viewers but what they might not realise is that he lives in Exeter, not far from the football ground.
