Gala celebrates two decades for stage school

If it’s the hottest show in town you’re looking for, look no further than Exeter Corn Exchange this Sunday 14 July at 6pm. Exeter’s only independent theatre arts school, Stage by Stage, is putting on a gala show to celebrate 20 years of making young people’s show business dreams come true.

Lunchtime networking for city professionals

Around 15 members of the Gilbert Stephens Lunch Club enjoyed a two-course luncheon at The Conservatory located on North Street.

The bi-monthly event, organised by the Devon-based law firm, is held at various venues in and around Exeter and gives professionals from the city the chance to meet in an informal setting.

Merry Go Round Toy Libraries fundraisers abseiling to raise money

Merry Go Round Toy Libraries are looking to raise much needed funds when they take part in an abseil from the 20 metre tower at the new Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre tomorrow (Saturday 13 July).

The charity runs two toy libraries, Carousel at West Exe Children's Centre, and Merry Go Round at Exeter Scrapstore in Belmont Park.

During sessions, children can try out toys, including inclusive and multicultural ones, before choosing some to take home. They have a wide selection of good quality toys, games and resource books for children of all ages, and staff are happy to...

Devon artists receive warm hospitality in Italy

AventHolidays, founded by Woodbury-based Jeremy Jackson, launched the first of their Italian painting breaks in the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of Ferrara, Italy. Exeter artist Rebecca de Mendonca, tutored the pastel painting course to a seven-strong group, which included BBC Radio Devon presenter Judi Spiers and Exeter PR consultant Glen King.

Guests enjoyed wine and canapés at a special event held in their honour hosted by Brother and Sister Marco and Melia in the private courtyard of their home.

Buckfastleigh Town Council take a tour around the former spinning mill

Local members of Buckfastleigh Town Council had a tour around the former Axminster Carpets’ spinning mill on Wednesday 3 July with representatives of the site’s new owners Buckfast Abbey.

The Abbey has undertaken this ambitious project having bought the 9.24 acre site, running adjacent to its land, from administrators at the end of March. Whilst the administrators are still clearing the site, consultants are working with the Abbey to draw up plans to transform the site although no firm decisions have been made.

Divorcees: don’t forget your pensions!

Research released by the National Office of Statistics has uncovered that only 6% of divorcing couples consider pensions within their settlement, emphasising the frightening financial state many people find themselves post-divorce.

The Prudential agree, adding that 40 per cent of those planning to retire in 2013 have been divorced. In general they are less likely to have private pensions, more likely to retire with debts, and less likely to believe they are financially well prepared for retirement.

City MP praises success of new social enterprise pilot project

Trainees on a pilot scheme to refurbish and re-sell bicycles in Exeter have been demonstrating their skills to MP and cycling enthusiast Ben Bradshaw.

The project, run by city charity Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), is designed to give training and skills to the unemployed as well prevent unwanted bikes from being dumped in landfill.
