Newcomer Don Armand has spoken of his "excitement" at the challenge that lies ahead after he completed his move to Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs. The 24-year-old forward has agreed a two-year contract and joins the Devon club from South African Super 15 outfit Stormers. Armand, who can play either at lock or in the back-row, made his Super Rugby debut as an injury replacement in 2012 and has not looked back since. He was part of the squad that won the SA Conference, having earlier in the year tasted success with the DHL Western Province Vodacom Cup team and, later in 2012, helping...

Met Office raises heatwave warning for South West to level 3

The Met Office has issued a revised heatwave warning for the South West, raising the level from two to three, meaning action is required.

Where a level two heat health grading should prompt an alert and readiness for action, a level three warning requires social and healthcare services to target specific actions at high-risk groups.

The Met Office forecasts a 90% probability of heatwave conditions on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July in the region.

Temperatures in Exeter are expected to reach 26 or 27 degrees once again and other parts of the region may see the mercury...

Spitfires' first season flying by!

The Exeter Spitfires are now past the half way point in their first season in the South West Baseball League. It has been an excellent inaugural season so far for the club in a number of ways.

The Spitfires have already gained their first ever win, something that was not necessarily expected against more experienced teams and, although they have suffered 18-15 and 19-9 losses to the Bristol Bats and a 9-0 loss to the Plymouth Mariners in their last three games, improvement was shown in a couple of those games as the players gain more experience.

Equally as important this...

The final episode of The Apprentice aired tonight on BBC1 at 8.00pm and saw Lord Sugar taking on Dr Leah Totton as a business partner with a personal investment of £250,000. Luisa Zissman with a proposed wholesale bakery business narrowly lost out to Leah's business plan for a chain of Medical Cosmetic clinics to be Lord Sugar’s Apprentice for 2013. The nation was on the edge of their seats to find out whether Lord Sugar would take the safe option of baking or the cosmetic route, which for him, has a moral dilemma.

Yet Leah’s new business venture proposal is not a new concept, as...

RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter

The scenery of Dartmoor and South Devon as depicted by father and son landscape painters William and FJ Widgery.

Both painters lived and worked in Devon throughout their careers. William Widgery (1826-1893) was entirely self-taught and developed an atmospheric style well suited to large-scale work.

By contrast, his son, FJ (1861-1942), received formal art training at home and abroad. His more precise draughtsmanship was ideal for small-scale work and illustration. Though high-spirited and sociable, William seems to have been totally dedicated to painting. FJ, though a very...
