Another first for RAMM - a Cheirothere

A new acquisition to the museum’s collection is a fossil footprint called a Cheirothere. It was found near Sidmouth in the Otter Sandstone (Triassic about 240 million years ago) and precedes the dinosaurs.The print and some less well preserved examples were discovered by Bob Coram of Swanage who made the donation to the RAMM.

Cheirotheres have been known from the Triassic rocks of the Midlands but this is the first recorded occurrence in the Triassic rocks of southern England.

Police puppies meet their new walkers

The first litter of puppies bred in-house by Devon and Cornwall Police will meet their new puppy walkers on Thursday 25 July.

A puppy walker takes a puppy to live with them for 12 to 18 months for socialising and early training, in preparation for the puppy entering its police training. Each puppy has undertaken a short series of tests to find out if they were suitable for police dog training and we are delighted to announce that all seven puppies have passed their suitability tests with flying colours. Twenty companies and apprentices will represent the wealth of Apprenticeship talent across the South West after being short-listed for the regional heat of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards 2013.

Exeter art wins international prize

Shortlisted from 105 entries, an artwork developed for an exhibition at RAMM has won an international linocut prize.

Exeter-based artist Volkhardt Müller adapted 12 little plastic TVs with musical clockwork to play finely carved miniature lino cuts on a perpetual roll for the Witness Box display in the exhibition, Any High Street. Warning after fires started by disposable barbecues

Fire crews from Exmouth have been called to two separate incidents in the last few days involving disposable barbecues being placed in plastic bins when they were still hot.

In the early hours of 22 July, crews were called to Exmouth Cricket Club, Queens Drive, after reports of a fire on the outside of the building. The fire damaged part of the tea rooms and crews were able to stop the fire spreading further into the building.

Devon Photographer Meia Allegranza launches exhibition in Topsham

Topsham-based commercial photographer and published poet, Meia Allegranza, is launching a Poetography Exhibition on 1 August 2013 in Topsham’s The Café.

The exhibition, called “Poetography for the All Generations”, will showcase Meia’s two passions, photography and poetry, as she brings together 14 of her favourite Photos and poems.

Keep it clean in Teignbridge

Teignbridge’s army of waste teams are getting out and about to help ensure beaches, parks and beauty spots are free from summer rubbish – but they are urging residents and visitors to help them out.

The council is providing its busy resorts with extra litter and wheelie bins and is also arranging for extra street cleans to get underway but hopes locals, holidaymakers and businesses to help ‘keep it clean’ by disposing of rubbish safely or taking it home with them.
