'Balloon-gate' tweet wins £500 for Devon charity

A twitter appeal by local businessman Adam Stone against a company’s 'ecological vandalism' has won a £500 donation to the Devon Wildlife Trust. While passing Exeter Car Dealers Bristol Street Motors, Adam saw an employee release handfuls of helium balloons into the sky rather than safely deflate them. After his chance encounter, Adam Stone CEO of Rokk Media and a director of The Daily Uk Ltd took to twitter to challenge the company directly. Members of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers Clubs have been participating in a number of competitions during the past couple months.

The ‘Just a Minute’ speaking competition final was held at The Waie Inn, with a total of 12 teams from across the county taking part. An entertaining night was had by both competitors and spectators, as members on the panel were challenged to speak for one minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition on a topic given to them. Young People challenge 'devastating' Youth Service cuts

Young People in Devon are campaigning against “devastating cuts” to the county’s youth services.

The cuts could see 60 jobs lost and council support and management withdrawn from the county’s 34 youth centres. Members of the UK Youth Parliament Devon with support from other groups have already mobilised a campaign against the proposed cuts with a petition to Devon County Council leader John Hart. Former Grand National winner Comply or Die, who famously cost William Hill bookmakers more than £7million when he won the world’s most famous race in 2008, is the guest retired racehorse at Exeter’s Bathwick Tyres Super Sunday meeting this weekend, February 9.

Jump racing’s superstar retired safe and sound in 2011 to Timmy Murphy’s Cilldara Stud in Gloucestershire having won eight races and £798,809 in prize money.

Flybe turnaround shows early sucess

Exeter airline Flybe will cut around 50 fewer jobs than initially expected as their business turnaround shows early signs of success.

The airline had initially proposed cutting 500 jobs as part of its turnaround plan revealed last November, but now says current cuts will be closer to 450.

Much of these savings have been made by cutting several unprofitable routes to remove the operating costs of the routes such as fuel and staff wages.

However this has incurred one off grounding costs of £14 million this year with a further one off costs of £26 milllion next year....
