It was always going to be the case that the role of police and crime commissioner would develop quickly – it had to.

So whereas 2013 set a necessary but probably unsustainable pace my restructured OPCC team is now better configured to face the challenges ahead and allows me to focus on key areas such as lobbying Government and on issues that matter most to us who are a long way away from the seat of power.

Endangered turtle washed up on Devon beach

A rare, warm water Kemp’s Ridley turtle has washed up on Woolacombe Beach, North Devon.

The small dead turtle was reported to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) on Tuesday 28 January.

Just 30cm in length, the creature is not the first Kemp’s ridley to be washed up along the UK coastline this winter. According to Dr Peter Richardson, MCS Biodiversity Programme Manager: "Two weeks ago, another Kemp’s ridley was discovered on a beach in Carmarthenshire by a woman out walking her dogs. Police seek man last seen in Devon

Police seeking a man connected to the murder of 72-year-old David Alderson in Falmouth believe he may be in Devon.

Devon and Cornwall police’s Crime Investigation Team are urgently seeking to trace Kevin Cooper, 33, from Redruth, who is wanted in connection with Mr Alderson’s death.

The last believed sighting of Kevin Cooper was in the Mutley Plain area of Plymouth during the early hours of Tuesday 28th January.

Officers are conducting active enquires in Plymouth in an attempt to locate and arrest him.

Devon Winter Ability Games Success

The Devon Winter Ability Games took place at the Plymouth Life Centre on the 24th January and has been hailed as a great success.

Over 400 young people with disabilities from 30 schools across Devon attended the event taking part in a range of events including football, table cricket and tennis. There were also taster sessions in Archery, Boccia and Tri Golf.

South West has wettest January on record

Early Met Office statistics for January 2014 show that the southeast and central southern England region has already had its wettest January in records going back to 1910, with three days still to go.

A large area of southern England from East Devon to Kent and inland across parts of the midlands has already seen twice the average rainfall for the month.

Southeast and central southern England has received more than twice its average rainfall with 175.2 mm of rain from 1 - 28 January. This beats the previous record of 158.2 mm set in January 1988.

Jack Nowell named in Six Nations squad

Exeter Chiefs wing Jack Nowell is set to debut for England on Saturday in the opening game of the RBS Six Nations.

The 20-year-old has already established himself as a regular starter for the Chiefs in premiership games and has been described as a ‘natural ruby player’ by head coach Rob Baxter.

Some commentators have claimed that the choice of Nowell in a new backline with only a combined total of only 91 caps by England’s head coach Stuart Lancaster is a risky proposition.

Exeter Councillors criticise children's home plans

Criticisms have been raised by county councillors from Exeter on provisional plans to close the three children’s homes operated by Devon county Council.

Funding for the council’s three homes, Rifford Road, Blossom Hill and Birchen lane has been included in the proposed cuts despite consultation on the issue yet to be carried out; leading some councillors to feel the decision to close the homes has already been made.
