Judi Spiers opens new WESC shop

Popular presenter and broadcaster Judi Spiers opened the latest new social enterprise charity shop for WESC Foundation in an official ribbon cutting ceremony at Sidwell Street, Exeter.

WESC Foundation (WESC), a school and college for children, young people and adults with sight loss is a specialist centre for Visual Impairment. The charity’s aim is to provide education and care for young people and adults with visual impairment, including complex needs, in their transition through school, college and beyond.

Exeter school alumni inspire current generation

An Exeter state school has joined a nationwide campaign to inspire students to career confidence and academic success.

St James School in Summer Lane is one of nearly 400 state schools and colleges across Britain registered with the national education charity Future First to set up ‘old school tie networks’ enabling them to harness the talents of ex-students to support current students.

Former students returned to the school as part of Back to School Weekwhich called on more state students to sign up to support the current generation at their old school.

Dawlish gets ready to ramble!

The pretty South Devon coastal town of Dawlish is readying itself for walkers of all ages and abilities as its inaugural walking festival gets ready to ramble from the start of April.

One thing that’s a given with Exeter Chiefs is that their fighting spirit will always be there in abundance.

Daisi secures funds for performance piece on the life of Lise Meitner

Arts in Education charity Daisi has secured £1500 in funding from the Institute of Physics (IOP) through its Public Engagement Grant Scheme, to run performances detailing the life and work of 20th century female physicist Lise Meitner.

This year, there were over fifty applications submitted to the IOP for the Public Engagement Grant Scheme. Nine projects were successful in securing funding from the IOP, and over £14,000 was awarded in total.

A396 roadworks delay

Work to replace a safety barrier and road re-surfacing on the A396, north of Cove, Tiverton, will take 13 days longer than originally planned.

Following a review by contractors, it is predicted that the current full time road closure will remain in place until the 24th March 2016.

The reason for the delay is due to a short section of the river bank not being strong enough to support the proposed safety barrier (road restraint system).

Additional piles and a raft foundation have to be constructed and to do this the contractor must drill through very challenging...

Appeal for Exeter flood wardens

An Exeter community group is looking for volunteers to help protect local people from flooding. St Thomas Community Emergency Group aims to have a flood warden in every street to help warn and support vulnerable residents in the event of a flood.

The group is currently working on a community emergency plan with the Environment Agency. It is also helping businesses in St Thomas and Marsh Barton prepare for floods. Currently only a handful people have come forward as volunteers, but the group needs more.
