Drone footage captures Iron Bridge refurbishment in Exeter

A bird’s-eye view has revealed the scale of the work recently carried out on Exeter’s historic Iron Bridge.

The Grade II Listed structure, which dates back to 1834, underwent a five-month programme of repairs to protect its cast iron framework. Drone footage taken by the engineering team documented the project from start to finish, showing the bridge’s transformation.

Man suffers spinal injuries in roof fall

A man is being treated for spinal injuries after falling though the roof of a building in a Devon village.

One fire crew from Hatherleigh attended the incident at The Old Tin Buildings in Northlew, near Okehampton at around 8.45 yesterday (Friday 31 July).

On arrival crews confirmed that a man had fallen through the roof the timber building and was trapped underneath galvanised roofing.

Small tools and manpower were used to reach the casualty, who was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

Two world-leading scientists from the University of Exeter have been honoured with a prestigious national science award.

Women shoppers targeted in supermarket distraction thefts

Police are warning women shoppers to be vigilant after a series of distraction thefts in supermarket car parks in Devon and Cornwall.

Officers are investigating at least five reports this week where lone females have been targeted in Plymouth, Newton Abbot and Saltash while loading shopping into their cars.

In each case the woman has been approached by a man asking for directions, usually to the local Post Office. Some have been asked to draw a map on a notepad supplied by the offender.

Ancient floor uncovered at Exeter Cathedral

An ancient tiled floor described as the "finest medieval tile pavement surviving in Devon and Cornwall" has been revealed for the first time in decades.

The floor has been uncovered as part of planned renovation work to the Cathedral. It is in a room above a Chapel, which in the Middle Ages was used as the Exchequer and in the 20th century as the Song School for boy choristers.

The decorative tiled floor has intricate patterns and was laid in the late 13th century.

The nearest similar medieval floor is in Winchester Cathedral.

Volunteers needed for depression study

Researchers from the University of Exeter have launched a large-scale research study to improve understanding of treatments that are currently offered to people with depression. The aim of the trial is to develop stronger, more effective and more widely available treatments.

The trial provides free online cognitive behavioural therapy for people in the South West who suffer with depression. Dartmoor’s landscape is among the richest in western Europe in terms of its prehistoric archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world and has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks. In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and 1/3 of all stone rows in the UK and Brittany are on Dartmoor.
