Exeter Business Improvement District (BID) has launched its latest campaign to support the city’s thriving centre with a dedicated celebration of independent shops and businesses.

Independent businesses are what make Exeter stand out from other cities in the South West and the campaign, called Summer of Independents, launches on Tuesday 4th July with the Exeter BID asking visitors and residents to vote for and support their favourite business. The fantastic sunny weekend we have just experienced here in the south west has seen thousands of people enjoying the outdoors and all that it has to offer. But whilst this weather provides a welcome boost to the local economy, the selfish behaviour of some people can potentially put people’s lives at risk.

At Spitchwick and Deeper Marsh cattle grid gateways were blocked and vehicles were parked on narrow roads blocking access for farm vehicles and emergency vehicles. The situation was repeated right across the National Park at popular locations.

East Devon District Council is delighted to announce that the 2017 events guide for Countryside has been published.

The guide, which runs from April through to September, is jam-packed with outdoor events and activities for all ages, which will take place across the district.

As well as over 60 events delivered by the Countryside team there are nearly 100 other events delivered by partner organisations to choose from.

The figures are now in from the Late Summer Fete, held on Saturday 17th September at Magdalen Court School and Kinderkare Nursery. This unique community event, spearheaded by Southernhay-based estate agents Naomi J Ryan , has raised an incredible £1,295.49 for bereavement support charity, Balloons .

Climbing event hits new peak

Elite climbers from across the globe descended – or should that be ascended – on Exeter this weekend.

They were taking part in the Quay Climbing Centre’s Deep Water Solo event, which sees a seven-metre wall built into the canal basin. Competitors climb without ropes and drop in to the canal when they lose their grip.

And there were also some familiar local faces who were trying their hand at the sport for the first time.

Summer drink and drug driving campaign results suggest that if you offend in Devon and Cornwall you’re twice as likely to get caught compared to the national average.

Figures from the recent summer drink and drug driving campaign show that in Devon and Cornwall the percentage of drivers tested that were positive, failed or refused a reading is just over twice the national average in almost all measures, with an average of around 21% compared to 10% nationally.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), the UK’s leading marine charity, says the number of jellyfish blooms- when jellies mass together - in UK coastal waters is on the increase as our seas start to warm up.
