With summer well and truly bere, Devon & Cornwall Police are asking everyone to have fun, drink responsibly and plan to get home safely.

The annual drink and drug drive summer campaign, #WhosGonnaDriveYouHome, started on 1 July and runs throughout July and August 2022.

Devon and Cornwall roads policing officers will be proactively patrolling the roads of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, to ensure those who get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs are dealt with robustly.

Council announces even more free holiday activities and meals for this Summer

Children from across Devon aged 5 to 16, who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals, are invited to take up an action-packed Summer holiday this year, as part of Devon County Council’s government-funded Holiday Activities and Food programme.

The programme is to provide free physical activities and healthy, nutritional, hot meals during school holidays, and the council has again joined up with activity providers to arrange the activities across Devon.

As temperatures soar, the RSPCA is providing advice to pet-owners on how to keep their animals cool and to make sure they are doing everything possible to keep them safe this summer.

The RSPCA’s animal centres have planned ahead for the heatwave by following the charity’s own advice on caring for animals in hot weather .

The charity is asking owners of all pets1 - from cats and dogs to small furries, horses and farm animals - to follow hot weather advice, and is also calling on animal champions to help look out for wildlife in the hot weather too.

The Bats in Churches project is appealing for volunteers in Devon to come forward and help with the final year of the National Bats in Churches Survey, an ambitious citizen science project to discover more about how and why bats are using churches.

The bathing water season started on 15 May with the Environment Agency carrying out regular testing of water quality at designated bathing sites across Devon and Cornwall until the end of September. High standards of water quality at swimming locations are important for everyone’s enjoyment of beaches across the south west. Wetter weather earlier in the year followed by warmer, sunnier spells this month in Devon may make pets and people more prone to ticks when walking in woodlands or long vegetation, Public Health Devon warn .
