Council sets out vision for coordinated and strategic library provision in Exeter

Councillors will hear Devon County Council’s vision for Exeter’s libraries next week in a report to the Exeter Board.

The County Council has been reviewing library provision in the city to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach to the city’s network of four libraries, Central, St Thomas, Pinhoe and Topsham.

Councillor Roger Croad, the Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for the library service says:

Urgent Police appeal for help in search for missing Exeter lady

Update 29 July 2pm: Police have released two more photographs of Alma Royle, which were taken in the local Co-op store on Dunsford Road on the day she went missing (Friday 26 July).

29 July 7.20am: Alma Royle, last seen in Heron Way, St Thomas, is still missing and Police are increasingly concerned for her safety. They have enlisted the help of mountain rescue teams to help find her, but are also asking the public to keep their eyes open.

Black Voices, a Birmingham-based performance ensemble renowned for its rich, powerful harmonies and stunning arrangements, are coming to Exeter on Saturday 8 June to do a concert and public workshop supported by St Thomas Gospel Choir.

School construction care wins National Gold Award

BAM Construction - Western Ltd, the contractors responsible for building the new Montgomery Primary School in Revers Road, St Thomas, have won a prestigious National Gold Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The annual awards, run by the Scheme, recognise the highest levels of consideration and care shown by construction sites throughout the UK towards their local neighbourhood, the general public, site staff and the environment. Only 77 UK sites achieved the gold standard this year from over 7000, making this site’s achievement particularly significant.

Kris Adamczak & Robert Spence met and formed acoustic duo Chordial in 2011 as a vehicle for their original songs and some interesting covers from their favourite songwriters. They both had a background of playing in rock bands and felt the need to explore the tonality of acoustic guitars, mandolin, etc.

The Cafe at 36 in St Thomas Exeter supports local artists, providing a space for small art exhibitions, or individual paintings and photographs.

We are thrilled that Naomi Hart, who is a well known local artist, has a small exhibition of her latest paintings at the Cafe. The paintings are inspired by a road trip to the Kimberley region of Australia in 2011.

Person treated for smoke inhalation after garage fire

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue have reported that it received several calls from the public regarding a building fire in a garage in the St Thomas area of Exeter.

A Fire Service spokesperson said: "Two pumps from Middlemoor and Danes Castle were mobilised to attend the incident, and a third appliance was also required due to the increased calls from the public.

"Four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a covering jet were used to control the fire. An ambulance was requested to assist one minor casualty at the incident suffering from smoke inhalation. A...

Exeter Scientists key to creating one of UK's greenest schools

Scientists at the University of Exeter have been heavily involved in developing a school which is in the national top ten for energy efficiency.

Experts at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Energy and the Environment have been studying the first year of operation of Montgomery Primary School in St Thomas, Exeter.

They say the school uses less than a third of the energy of a typical school, which puts it in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally for energy efficiency.

Inaugural St Thomas Community Festival planned for 2013

The inaugural St Thomas Community Festival will take place in and around St Thomas Pleasure Grounds on Saturday 14th September 2013. The festival is the brainchild of the recently formed St Thomas Community Association (STCA) and is intended to be a celebration of the St Thomas area as a vibrant, diverse and exciting part of the city.

The organisers hope that the event will build community cohesion, bringing together residents of all ages and backgrounds in a celebration of the variety of sporting, creative and musical talents that flourish in the area.
