Maynard robotics team wins UK’s only trophy at Denmark Championships

“It was thoroughly well deserved,” said the Maynard School’s Head of Computing, Laura Burt, of the robotics team winning the UK’s only trophy at the FIRST LEGO League Open European Championship in Aarhus, Denmark over the weekend of 27-28 May 2017.

With 50 countries represented from across the world and a total of 118 teams, only five of whom were representing the UK, the Maynard Wine Gums was the sole all-girls’ team from Europe and just one of only two in the entire competition.

The Maynard School in Exeter welcomed a new recruit this week with the arrival of Nula, a former working guide dog who has recently retired from service and is looking for a more relaxed lifestyle.

“The Junior School girls absolutely adore her and she has settled in just brilliantly,” said Keagh Fry, Year 4 teacher and official guardian for Nula. “Being an ex-guide dog means she is impeccably well behaved and she is just lapping up all the fuss and attention from everyone at the School. Blundell's students complete Ten Tors Challenge

Twenty-two students from Blundell’s School took part in the annual Ten Tors event on Dartmoor over the weekend.

Despite gale force conditions in camp the night before the event, reducing sleep to just a couple of hours, all students made it to the start line at 7am and completed their respective distances in great spirits.

Conditions which improved as the weekend progressed served well to spur them on. Blundell’s fielded three teams; two 35 mile groups and a 45 mile group.

World-leading dementia expert Professor Clive Ballard will deliver his first lecture since joining the University of Exeter.

Clive, a global authority in age-related disease, joined the University of Exeter Medical School as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean in October. He will deliver a talk entitled Dementia: Prevention, Treatment and Care on April 26.

Exeter School's 16th concert for WaterAid

For the 16th year running and with support from South West Water and On Tap Water, the talented young musicians and singers from Exeter School will perform a special concert to raise funds for international charity WaterAid.

All proceeds from the concert, which takes place at St Michael's Church, Heavitree, from 7.30pm on Wednesday 26 April, will go directly to WaterAid projects in Zambia, helping some of the country's poorest communities gain access to clean water and safe sanitation.

Maths learning takes off at Exeter Airport

Year 5 pupils from Exeter Junior School visited Exeter Airport to investigate maths in the world around them and develop their skills of independent questioning and reflection.

Prior to the visit, pupils collaborated to devise interesting mathematical questions that they could solve by consulting airport staff and conducting independent research using sources such as leaflets and the airport website.

A trio of siblings from Exeter Cathedral School has each been awarded a place in the prestigious National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain.

The Daniel-Greenhalgh siblings - Esme (y7), Theo (y6) and Sabina (y5) - have all won a place in various sections of the elite GB orchestra for children. Six Blundell’s pupils, who all live in Mid-Devon, are celebrating after being offered places at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Both Bertie Frankpitt and Toby Whitehead have offers for St Edmund Hall, Oxford – Bertie to read Earth Sciences and Toby for Biochemistry and he also has a choral scholarship.
