King Billy student flats approved again

Plans to demolish an historic Exeter city centre pub and replace it with student flats have once again been given the go-ahead.

In October 2017, the scheme for The King Billy was granted approval by Exeter City Council’s planning committee, which in addition to the student flats, would also see a commercial unit and a restaurant/pub at street level.

However, in January 2021, as work on the redevelopment of the Longbrook Street site had not begun, the extant planning permission expired, forcing developers Rengen to go through the planning process again.

A meeting of East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee due to take place next Wednesday (September 23) to discuss Cranbrook Town Centre has been postponed following significant changes to the original proposals by developers.

First steps to replace old bridge on Exeter Quayside taking place

The first steps to replace an old bridge on Exeter Quayside that had come to the end of its life have taken place this week.

The wooden Mallison Bridge, which spans the medieval leats on the north bank of the River Exe, has been removed as its timbers had become rotten and unsafe to use.

A local development order (LDO) is being proposed for district heating networks in the area to the east of Exeter, in and around the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone.

The LDO is a way for East Devon District Council, as the Local Planning Authority, to put in place a simplified planning system by granting planning consent for development as specified.
