The Pictish Trail & Sweet Baboo

Event Date:
08/12/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Two innovative musical pals, both established solo folk artists in their own right, come together from their respective corners of Britain for a night of sparkling acoustic tunes.

The Pictish Trail is the nom de plume of Johnny Lynch, a Scottish musician who spent some time running Fence Records alongside Kenny Anderson (King Creosote). His music is a sonorous mixture of acoustic-driven balladry and lo-fi synthesised pop, that has been described as ‘a post-summer trove of sun-warped electro, anamorphic folk’ (Plan B Magazine).

Sweet Baboo is Stephen Black, a native of the...

Spiro

Event Date:
04/12/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Spiro are something of a slippery beast when it comes to being contained by mere words. Guitarist Jon Hunt has a go.

‘Weʼve got as much to do with minimalist classical and dance music as we have with folk. Even though we use folk tunes, theyʼre raw materials that the rest of the sound is built around.’

One thing is certain – Spiro are their own people, commendably operating in their own sphere and at their own pace. This contemporary acoustic ensemble first came together through Bristolʼs folk sessions scene in 1993, trading under the name of The Famous Five. All four...

COCO & THE BUTTERFIELDS

Describing their music as fip fok – a genre combinging folk, pop and hip hop – this band draws comparisons with Dizraeli and the Small Gods, and are big festival favourites.

LAND OF THE GIANTS

Formed in October 2009 and with lofty aspirations, the Giants have been busy pounding dance floors with their raucous, feel-good, highly-addictive shows. With another huge summer of festivals already in the bag for 2014 including Glastonbury, Bestival, Boomtown and a tour of Ireland, it seems that many more people will be enjoying their unique sound...

Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band

Event Date:
23/11/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Influential singer-violinist Nancy Kerr launches her eagerly anticipated solo debut, Sweet Visitor.

Already a respected interpreter of traditional material, Nancy’s emergence as a writer of rare style has drawn comparisons to William Blake in her reawakening of a radical folk mythology as a backdrop for contemporary narratives about love and conflict, migration, hardship and jubilation, and the tensions between rural and urban life.

Nancy’s 2014 gets off to a great start with two BBC Radio 2 Folk Award wins as part of EFDSS’ Full English and a nomination as part of The...
