Hospiscare hairdresser turns up heat for cycle challenge

A Hospiscare hairdresser is set to complete a 450km cycle challenge in blistering temperatures next month after raising more than £4k for the local charity.

58 year-old Lesley Weeks has spent the past year fundraising to take part in the challenge which takes place across Vietnam and Cambodia next month.

Lesley has worked for Hospiscare for more than two decades and this will be the fourth adventure she has embarked upon for the charity.

Staff from Marks & Spencer in Exeter gave Hospiscare patients an important gift recently after choosing the charity as its Store Charity of the Year.

15 hand-held, battery operated fans were delivered to patients at the Exeter hospice, to not only help them keep cool, but also to help with symptom control.

Hospiscare Ward Manager Petra Osborne said: “The fans are particularly helpful for patients who suffer from breathlessness, panic or anxiety as they can be used in conjunction with strategies taught to patients to control their symptoms.”

A mother-of-two from Exeter will take on the race of her life for Hospiscare in October when she completes the York Marathon in memory of her father. 40-year-old Natalie Roberts has been training for her first ever marathon over the past few months and is hoping to not only cross the finish line on 20 October but also to raise money for the charity who looked after her dad in his final days. Despite being naturally sporty, Natalie has never competed in a long distance run but said that she wanted to give something back to the charity who had shown her father and her family such support....

Fourteen bankers spent a day lending a helping hand at Hospiscare’s Enterprise Centre (HEC) recently, before bouncing, wheeling and paddling down Exeter Quay to raise money for the local charity.

The team from RBS swapped spreadsheets and suits for Ebay and second-hand clothing to spend a day alongside staff and volunteers at the HEC, processing the donations and house clearance items which are brought to the Trusham Road site every day.

Sunflowers help raise funds for Hospiscare at Darts Farm

Each year Darts Farm in Topsham grows a beautiful field of sunflowers for customers to pick in return for a donation to Hospiscare. This year the fantastic weather has made for a bumper crop, allowing Darts Farm to raise more money than ever before for the local charity.

So far, over £2,600 has been raised for Hospiscare and there are still plenty of sunflowers left for people to pick or to buy in store. For a map of the farm and instructions on how to pick your own, please visit the farm shop.

Once the sunflowers die down, they are left in the field as feed for local birds...

Wine tasting enthusiasts are set enjoy this year’s Open Day at Pebblebed Vineyard, Topsham in aid of Hospiscare.

Pebblebed Vineyard owner Geoff Bowen will offer hourly tours throughout Sunday 8 September to members of the public, with the chance to taste the Devonshire grape at its best.
