Honiton’s Helen shortlisted for Devon Sports Coach of the Year

Honiton Gymnastics Club high-performance coach Helen Reddy has been shortlisted for the Coach of the Year Award in the Devon Sports Awards 2017.

The Level 5 gymnastics coach, who has been involved in the sport for more than 30 years, will now attend a glittering awards ceremony at Sandy Park in June.

Helen has been recognised by awards’ judges thanks to her tireless work at both Honiton Gymnastics club (where she is a coach and board member) and at Ivybridge Community College (where she is Head of Performing Arts and runs the gymnastics academy).

Police appeal for help in tracing local man

Police are keen to locate a 25 year old man from Honiton known as Josh Richards (see image) who officers believe may be able to provide some information that could help with their enquiries relating to two separate offences that took place last year.

Detectives would like to know his whereabouts so they can speak to him in connection with the theft of a car from Ottery St Mary in November and a burglary in Honiton that took place in October.

Josh is known to have links in Axminster, Torquay and Ottery St Mary.

Honiton firefighters are organising a recruitment campaign for prospective on-call firefighters on Saturday 20 May from 9am-1pm.

A crew will be available in the High Street with another positioned at Tesco’s to talk to anyone interested in becoming a firefighter within the community.

No previous experience of firefighting is necessary for this role – the ideal prospective firefighter starts with a commitment to the community, a positive attitude and a good level of fitness.

Members of the business community in Honiton have pitched in to help Honiton Gymnastics Club develop its facilities since moving into its own premises nine months ago.

When the club moved out of Honiton Gymnastics Centre and into the old Rainbow store on Ottery Moor Lane last August there was a huge amount of work to do. As a result, many big-hearted businesses in Honiton and further afield have come to the rescue, providing the club with discounted and free materials, helping with supplies for events, and offering free labour for essential work.

Hospiscare and Chilcotts Auctioneers are celebrating raising funds of more than £10,000 with an ongoing fundraising initiative that benefits both the charity and visitors to auctions.

Chilcotts’ staff kitchen at the Silver Street sale room – which is next to the livestock market - is used every sale day by the local Hospiscare team to sell teas, coffees, savoury snacks such as bacon rolls and popular homemade cakes, with every penny raised going to the charity.

19 medals and two national finalists for Honiton Gymnastics Club

One after the other Honiton gymnasts stepped onto the podium to collect honours at the weekend, as 19 partnerships medaled at the annual South West Prelims competition.

The competition was held at King Edmund International Gymnastics Centre in Yate, near Bristol.

Among the medalists were four Honiton gold medal partnerships, two of which have now qualified to represent the South West at the National Development Plan finals at Stoke-on-Trent in May.

Woman seriously hurt in fuel tanker crash

Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision involving a fuel tanker near Honiton.

At around 7:15am on Sunday 19th March, a serious collision took place between a blue Peugeot 206 and a 44-tonne fuel tanker on Windgate Hill, Honiton.

A third vehicle, a black Vauxhall Corsa was following directly behind the Peugeot 206 and was involved in a secondary collision.

The 18-year-old female driver of the blue Peugeot sustained serious, life changing arm injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, where she remains following surgery.

A dog-loving nine-year-old has raised hundreds of pounds for homeless hounds after challenging herself to a 20-mile sponsored walk around the Devon countryside. Faith Boxer, from Honiton, walked 20 miles over several weeks after splitting the mileage into four, five-mile stints with the support of her Gran, who helped her organise the whole thing and plan her route.
