Hospiscare and Chilcotts Auctioneers are celebrating raising funds of more than £10,000 with an ongoing fundraising initiative that benefits both the charity and visitors to auctions.

Chilcotts’ staff kitchen at the Silver Street sale room – which is next to the livestock market - is used every sale day by the local Hospiscare team to sell teas, coffees, savoury snacks such as bacon rolls and popular homemade cakes, with every penny raised going to the charity.

The initiative has been running for six years after husband and wife team Duncan and Liz Chilcott suggested Hospiscare might like to provide refreshments for bidders. The charity took up the offer, and the café is organised and run each month by Mary Bolshaw from Hospiscare. Mary is also chief cake maker along with Carol Sexton and the pair have become a much-loved part of the business for staff and customers alike.

“Back in 2011, we never dreamed that the fundraising would be such a success,” said Liz Chilcott.

“Over the past six years, funds have built up steadily. We’ve been keeping a tally and were over the moon to see that the total had reached £10,000.”

The café has proved immensely popular with bidders and visitors to the sales, many of whom attend on a regular basis and greatly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy a cuppa and snack.

“In another six years, we are sure we’ll see the total reach well over the £20,000 mark,” added Liz, “and it’s all thanks to our generous buyers and visitors, and the Hospiscare team’s hard work
