Travel Devon roadshows helping tackle congestion

More than 3,000 people in Devon have so far been helped with advice and support from Travel Devon Roadshows.

More than 120 of the free roadshows, organised by Devon County Council, have been held in Exeter, Exmouth, Newton Abbot and Totnes in the past 15 months.

The Travel Devon roadshows are one of the projects developed through Devon County Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund which aims to support jobs and businesses by tackling congestion and promoting greater use of sustainable travel.

Teenager arrested after fire damages Exmouth bungalow

A 17-year-old boy from Exmouth has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft, arson and criminal damage following a fire at a property in Kay Close, Exmouth on Wednesday 7 August. No-one was in the property at the time.

The teenager has been released on police bail until 5 November, to appear at Heavitree Road police station.

The crime number is KE/13/1826.

Exmouth bungalow fire being treated as suspicious

A joint police and fire service investigation has been launched following a fire at a bungalow in Exmouth which was severely damaged.

The fire broke out at the property in Kay Close, Exmouth at around 8pm on Wednesday 7 August 2013.

No-one was in the property at the time.

The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, spread to other properties causing smoke damage.

Three residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated but no-one was injured.

Local officers are doing house-to-house enquiries in the area.

Prostate Cancer UK has unveiled details of the entertainment and activities on offer at its cycling event being held on Sunday 11 August in Exmouth.

Taking its name from the Jurassic coastline it embraces, Jurassic Classic will see over 900 cyclists pass through some of Devon’s most picturesque coastline when it comes to the county on 11th August.

Exmouth bungalow destroyed by fire

Four fire appliances were mobilised to Kay Close, Exmouth, at 8pm last night following a report of a property fire. On arrival fire crews discovered one domestic bungalow well alight with the fire starting to spread to adjoining properties.

After establishing that everybody had been accounted for, crews used eight breathing apparatus sets, three hose reel jets, two main jets, numerous ladders and roof ladders, a thermal imaging camera and two positive pressure ventilation fans to extinguish the fire.

Wet 'n' Wild summer festival next week

It's that time of year again! EDDC’s Countryside team kick off their annual Wet ’n’ Wild Summer Festival at 8pm on Thursday evening 15 August with Meet the Bats.

The Axe Estuary Wetlands is known as an excellent habitat for bats; more than half of our 17 native species of bat have been found there, including the rarest of our natives; the grey long-eared bat.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn to use an electronic bat detector to identify the different species. The Meet the Bats session will be repeated on Friday evening 16 August at 8pm.

Flag flies to celebrate roof topping out at Spinnakers, Exmouth Marina

The Devon flag was hoisted to the top of the Spinnakers development at Exmouth Marina to mark the topping out of the building.

Long standing resident and former chairman of the Exmouth Quay Residents’ Association, Ian Dowell was helped by Chris Fayers, Director Eagle One Homes to raise the Devon Flag over the development to mark the roof being put into place.

Joining them were Chris Baxter from Bradleys and Joanna Hole from Jackson Stops who are handling sales of the apartments and Jason Willicombe from Midas.

Bring your discoveries for identification and see if you can stump the archaeologist. Learn how to use a sorting tray when on digs, have a go at recording your objects, find out how to draw recreations of whole objects from fragments; and get nose to nose with articles from the past 40,000 years.

Exmouth man sentenced to life imprisonment for his mother's murder

Today, Wednesday 24 July, Andrew Cane aged 31 from Exmouth was convicted of the murder of his mother Linda Sheard, who was found dead in her home at Port Mer Close, Exmouth, on 11 July 2012. Cane was given a sentence of life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 15 years.

Following the verdict, Detective Inspector Gregg Dawe said: “I would like to thank Linda Sheard’s family for the assistance they have given the police in the difficult circumstances that they found themselves in. This being that Andrew Cane, the offender for this murder, was the victim’s son.
