A la Ronde is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of Mick Abbott’s paintings, many of which were inspired by items within the A la Ronde collection.

Mick Abbott is a full time artist, dividing his time between Cambridge, Brittany and New York. He was an art teacher at Comberton Village College, Cambridge for 22 years and loved it. In recent years Mick has been Artist in Residence at several National Trust properties, including Newark Park and Hanbury Hall, and in 2013 is delighted to be associated with A la Ronde. Council expands innovative project to help residents affected by welfare reform

An innovative scheme developed by Devon County Council to support residents affected by the government welfare reforms is being extended.

Delivered by the Council’s Library Service, the pioneering ‘Free Fridays’ scheme has been piloted in three towns across Devon and has proved so successful it is now being expanded to include a further eight.

Stars shine at fun-filled walk for Hospiscare

More than 400 women from Exeter, Mid and East Devon gathered in Exmouth at the weekend wearing flashing bunny ears to enjoy a night out with the girls while walking 12k for Hospiscare.

The Starlight Walk is one of the charity’s biggest annual events and this year the women enjoyed a new route that took them along the seafront and out into the Exmouth Countryside.

The evening began at Exmouth Rugby Club where the women enjoyed a warm-up session given by a Zumba instructor, Debra from Zumba Exmouth, with players from the club joining in to show their support.

Exeter City’s Football in the Community Trust is once again running a full programme of popular children’s football roadshows during the May half term, following the success of the Easter events which were attended by around 500 children from across the region.

There will be three different events in Exeter, plus courses in Dawlish, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Crediton, Tiverton, Seaton, Feniton, Okehampton, North Tawton and Barnstaple.

Seasonal beach ban on dogs starts 1 May

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has passed byelaws prohibiting dogs from certain parts of the beaches in the District between 1 May and 30 September each year.

There are still many areas where dogs are welcome and visitors who are unsure about where they may take their dogs onto the beach are strongly advised to check the signs or EDDC's website before taking their dogs onto the beaches. EDDC is happy to give advice to holidaymakers with dogs about the best areas to visit.

A la Ronde, the National Trust's quirky 18th century 16-sided house near Exmouth, needs extra volunteers to help with fundraising activities in order to support the conservation of its fragile shell-encrusted gallery. If you enjoy meeting people and have an interest in history or conservation then we would be delighted to meet you.

Week of events to encourage Real Nappy use in East Devon

New and soon-to-be parents in East Devon are being invited to a series of events promoting Real Nappy use around the district next week.

Free real nappy trial kits and expert advice are on offer at a series of drop-in events in many of the district’s towns. It’s all part of celebrating the national Real Nappy Week (15–19 April).

Local charity Hospiscare is reminding women to enrol for the Hospiscare Ladies Walk which this year is for one night only on Saturday 11th May, in Exmouth.

The walk this year has an earlier start time of 8pm, and a new 12K route along the seafront and through the Exmouth countryside incorporating the cycle path to Budleigh.

All participants will then be offered refreshments back in the marquee, with live music to enjoy. Judi Spiers from BBC Radio Devon and John Humphreys, the Mayor of Exmouth, are both supporting the walk, and we hope you can too!

Competitive Cynthia set for Starlight Walk’s new route

More than 100 women have already signed up to take part in this year’s Starlight Walk for Hospiscare, which has a new 12k route along Exmouth’s seafront and beautiful countryside.

The walk is back for one night only taking place on Saturday May 11. The Hospiscare ladies walk usually takes place on two nights with one walk in Tiverton and one in Exmouth.

But Hospiscare has combined the walks to one venue for 2013 to maximise the amount of money raised.
