English Touring Opera presents Jason

Loosely based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, Cavalli’s Jason was a runaway hit when it premiered in Venice in 1649, and it proved one of the most popular operas of the 17th century. Like many operas from this period, the story uses classical myth as a jumping off point. The opera opens after Jason has abandoned his wife, Isiphile, for the sorceress Medea. Cupid, protector of Isiphile, intervenes on her behalf, sending Jason and a motley cast of characters on a rocky journey back to his family in Lemnos.

Shobana Jeyasingh is renowned for dance creations of visceral energy and excellence as well as collaborations with outstanding composers. This autumn her company returns to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

In Strange Blooms, her new piece, Jeyasingh works with Gabriel Prokofiev, a classically-trained composer who revels in the latest technology. Together they remix early baroque music with all its exuberance, ornamentation and contrast.

Met Office issues warning of heavy rain and possible flooding

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of further outbreaks of heavy, thundery rain for the South West during Thursday and Friday (3rd and 4th October). It has warned the public of the risk of flooding.

The Met Office reports: "Further outbreaks of heavy, thundery, rain will spread from the south during Thursday and overnight into Friday with the potential for some torrential downpours in places."

"The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding."
