Fundraisers have smashed their target of raising £30,000 to help an Exeter mum who is the only person in the world with two rare terminal conditions.

Jo Smith (pictured, right) has a unique combination of diseases and doctors say the odds of suffering both is over five billion to one.

The 36-year-old suffers from pulmonary hypertension and lymphatic cancer. She is thought to be the first person in the world to suffer from these two different rare terminal diseases.

Public meetings are underway to discuss major changes to Devon’s children’s centres service as the county council prepare to cut £1.2 million from the service.

The children’s centre service from Devon County Council currently offer help and advice to all parents, carers and children in a range of areas such as child and family health, parenting, money, training and employment

Heavy rain may disrupt travel

Surface water flooding may cause some travel disruption this afternoon as the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning for this afternoon (28 April).

Heavy, thundery downpours are expected to develop from 1pm bringing between 10-15mm of rain within an hour.

Some areas will see 30mm of rain over a longer period and may be enough to create minor travel disruption from surface water flooding.

The Met Office’s Chief Forecaster, said: “Conditions are unstable at present, and this will allow some heavy showers to develop across parts of Devon and Cornwall on Monday...

Look out for a NAFAS "Lonely Bouquet"

So, the ultimate foodie event is now upon us. A perfect excuse to overindulge in eating and drinking our favourite local foods and tipples. And boy do we have some great produce down here in the South West.

But how well do these business score when it comes to understanding and protecting their intellectual property ("IP") rights? I'm talking here about issues like: do they register their brands as trade marks, so as to be able to stop others from using the same or a similar trade mark?

Exeter GPs health centre prescribes solar

Exeter-based Mount Pleasant Health Centre has had solar panels fitted to its roof to reduce its high energy bills.

The busy medical practice opted for the system as it has extremely large energy usage. In the spirit of the centre’s continued commitment to the public, its management were naturally keen to look at ways to reduce its carbon footprint. The Centre chose local company SunGift Solar to undertake the work. The practice now proudly displays a 10kW solar PV system on its roof, which is being used to provide power for the centre’s lighting, IT infrastructure and specialist...

Further warning against fake police fraud

Police are urging householders to be on their guard following further reported incidents of a phone fraud where unsuspecting victims are duped by people posing as police. Reports of this scam have now been recorded in the South Hams area with four incidents recorded in Paignton yesterday, Thursday, 24 April, with two victims alone having parted with more than £12,000 each. This follows an incident last week when an elderly man from Paignton was duped out of £12,000 by someone posing to be a police officer from the Metropolitan Police who claimed that someone had been arrested in possession...
