6000 chickens killed in Devon fire

6000 chickens have died as a result of a fire that took place earlier today at Perkins Village near Exeter.

Over six appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were called to deal with the fire which occured at 10.34am.

As well as extinguishing the fire, crews did their best to move cattle and livestock to safety.

Unfortunately the incident left a chicken barn completely destroyed and resulted in the death of 6000 chickens.

It took firefighters an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of fire is accidental.

Flood Recovery Minister Visits Devon and Dorset

The newly appointed flood recovery minister for Devon and Dorset has been visiting victims of the flooding in both counties earlier today.

The new minister, Mr Oliver Letwin, the MP for West Dorset also held meetings today in Exeter and Dorchester to meet businesses and residents to understand the impact across the region and work that needs to be done.

Watch: Amazing Aerial Video of the Dawlish repairs

Network rail have today released a new video of the lastest repairs to the Dawlish coastal track.

Taken by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) the short video shows how far the engineers have got since the track was destoyed on Febuary 3.

The UAV pans the entire operation bringing a e view of the staggering scale of the repair works.

The tarck is expected to be re-opened next month.

Nature reserve will bear fruit

Volunteer nature lovers in Honiton came along on Thursday to help with the planting of new trees at EDDC’s Honiton Bottom community nature reserve.

Alex Gibson from the Council’s SWITCH project and Nathan Robinson from EDDC’s Countryside team were supervising the planting of fruit trees that will form a new orchard in the reserve to attract bees and butterflies, as well as wildlife.

There are also plans for a hay meadow with some wild flowers and a series of ponds. There may also be some beehives and hopefully a community garden.

DCC Cabinet Member Resigns

The councillor in charge of overseeing major cuts to Devon County Council’s people services in Devon has resigned.

Cllr Will Mumford will leave his post as the cabinet member responsible for education and children’s services after being appointed managing director of the property company NPS South West.

As the company contracts work with Devon County Council, Mr Mumford has resigned to avoid a conflict of interest between the roles.

As a cabinet member, Mr Mumford oversaw the ongoing, controversial consultation into the future of the council’s youth centres....

Drawing the predictable melange of charity shop jumpers and Doc Martens, Bombay Bicycle Club took centre stage at the Great Hall playing a sold out set in the halfway leg of their UK tour. Swept there on a compelling tide of nostalgia and elated on expectations of £23 tickets, that were needless to say; high.

The band have received heady mainstream success from album number four ‘So Long, See You Tomorrow’ with singles such as ‘Luna’ gracing the airwaves of the daytime Radio One playlist.

The set was a notch up in professionalism from the 2010 post ‘had the blues’ relative...

Kyra Daniel, Branch Manager at haart of Exeter, is celebrating after scooping the ‘top branch manager’ accolade for growing market share at the estate agency’s annual conference and awards ceremony. She won a trip of a lifetime to Abu Dhabi.

Rugby World Cup tickets go on sale from May

Rugby fans in and around Exeter will have a chance to get their hands on Rugby World Cup 2015 tickets from May onwards.

England Rugby 2015, Tournament Organiser for Rugby World Cup 2015, has today released details on the Rugby Community Ticket programme that will see 500,000 tickets go on sale to rugby fans through the English club network and wider rugby community from May 2014. Exeter will be hosting three matches at Sandy Park as part of Rugby World Cup 2015.
