25% of SW residents splurge ‘on the card’

With the rise in interest-free credit cards and more South West residents looking to build their credit rating, it seems many are now looking to put purchases ‘on the card’.

A study by TopCashback.co.uk, released today, found that around half of South West residents believe that having a credit card has allowed them to live beyond their means, whilst 86 per cent say that it’s helped them to build a credit rating.

Around a quarter of South West residents are looking to credit cards as a way to spread the cost of spontaneous purchases and luxury goods.

Devon veterans honoured with Russian medals

The Russian embassy has honoured over 50 World War Two veterans in Exeter today (Friday 19 December) for their part in transporting crucial supplies to Russia.

Counsellor of The Russian Embassy, Mr Sergey Nalobin, presented Ushakov medals to the men of the Arctic Convoys at a special ceremony at County Hall.

The medal is awarded to sailors who have displayed courage in the course of defending Russia or its interests.

Street urinals to be trialled in Exeter

Revellers who get ‘caught short’ this weekend will be able to take advantage of temporary urinals placed in Exeter city centre.

Walls, doorways and window-sills are currently being used as urinals, causing real nuisance and untold misery for local residents and businesses.

The street urinals are being trialled on one of the busiest weekends of the year and will be available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (19, 20 and 21 December).

Chiefs side to face Sale Sharks

Rob Baxter admits the savage bite Sale Sharks gave his Exeter Chiefs side back in April remains fresh within the minds of himself and his players ahead of their latest Aviva Premiership match-up at the AJ Bell Stadium tomorrow night (7.45pm).

Exeter Street Food will be hosting The Christmas Street Food Party at The Quay, Exeter on Tuesday 23 December between 5.30pm and 9.30pm, celebrating the finale of it’s street food events in 2014.

The Big Issue across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset has received an early Christmas present of smart new tabards for its vendors, thanks to support from the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise (PDSE).

PDSE and the Big Issue have a long standing relationship. The main mission of PDSE is to increase oral health awareness and address oral care inequalities for members of the community who are disadvantaged or at risk.

South West house prices to increase by 2% in 2015

House prices in the UK will see an average increase of three percent over the course of next year, bolstered by recent changes to Stamp Duty, continuing demand and lack of supply of property, according to the RICS housing forecast for 2015. Exeter charity Hospiscare is celebrating after receiving an early Christmas present - the £3,540 left outside one if its city shops last month.

Today (Thurs) local police officially handed over the cash found outside the Hospiscare Cowick Street shop as the identity of the donor remains a mystery. No one came forward to claim the cash, the police are satisfied it was a genuine donation and Hospiscare has now banked the used £20 notes left in two carrier bags outside the shop window on November 10th.
