Police crackdown on drink and drug driving

Throughout December Devon and Cornwall Police officers will be turning up the heat on drink and drug driving.

Any drivers involved in a collision and any motorists whose driving may lead police to suspect they are under the influence of drink will be breathalysed. If drug driving is suspected they may have to undergo a roadside sobriety test.

Roads Policing Inspector Richard Pryce said: “Drink driving cannot be tolerated at any time of the year but we will ensure very close attention is being paid over the festive period. Our message is clear and simple: don’t drink and...

Exhibition reveals how Victorian artists reawakened the Gothic in the South West

From the spires of Truro Cathedral, to the rose window of Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), the South West boasts some of the finest medieval-style architecture in Britain – yet these landmarks were built in the 19th century. A new exhibition at the RAMM investigates how the Victorian mania for all things Gothic created some of the century’s most impressive architecture, art, and literature – and in the process transformed the West Country. Two experts in Victorian literature and history at the University of Exeter have a new book ‘Art and Soul: Victorian and the Gothic’ which...

Firefighters to stage 24 hour strike

Firefighters in England today announced a further 24 hour strike to take place from 9am on Tuesday 9 December.

This follows the government’s decision to commence the Parliamentary procedure to implement regulations for an unfair, unaffordable and unworkable pension scheme. After almost three years of discussions firefighters still face a stark choice of either being sacked or a severely reduced pension if they fail fitness tests as a result of naturally declining fitness through age. The evidence presented by the Fire Brigades Union has created considerable political opposition to...
